Last night I went to Pulitzer/Nebula-winner
Michael Chabon's signing at
Bookpeople. I arrived 30 minutes early and the store was already standing-room-only.
Chabon read an excerpt from
The Yiddish Policemen's Union, his recent Nebula-winner, and he proved to be an excellent reader. i was struck by how much he resembled Michael Douglas's character in Wonder Boys, a film based on an early Chabon novel.
After the reading and a brief Q&A, Chabon started signing. He was a real trouper, signing for a couple of hours, and even willing to personalize books if requested. It was the second longest signing I'd ever attended. First was a signing by
Kinky Friedman at
Murder by the Book in Houston, shortly after he announced his candidacy for governor.
Despite the size of the crowd, the Austin sf community did not have a large presence. The only other people I recognized from the sf community were Lawrence Person and the Moorcocks. Maybe most of the sf people saw Chabon at the Nebulas a couple of weeks ago.
