The Yuletide season is upon us and I am indescribably excited. Not just for prezzies (though I love giving and receiving as much as anyone) but just knowing that there are other people out there who have the same stories and characters in their hearts and mind. And one of those people is you! So I thank you, first and foremost, for being you and being awesome and offering to write a story just because I ask :)
It's proper form to state that I'll be delighted with anything you write, but it's also very true. These are four fandoms I love without reservation, there is no aspect I am not interested in seeing explored, and bit best gift I could possibly hope to receive is for you to share with me what you find enthralling about these characters/shows, even if that doesn't quite line up with the things I mention.
About Me
Based on my list this year, I love Canadian television, Michael Riley, and complicated, down-to-earth women. :]
I'm a child of extremes. I love heart wrenching angst and gut busting humour. The lyrical vignette, and the minutely plotted story. My favourite high in the world is discovering something new about a character when a writer explores a new direction and their own interpretation. What I do tend to shy away from is fluff - for some reason excessive happiness has never appealed to me except when paired with hilarity - and very explicit, highly graphic sex, especially of the PWP variety. I'm okay with non-con and dub-con, and would actually find those intriguing with these fandoms, if you are so moved.
In general, my favourite pairings are cross generational, and I am fascinated by the dynamic, whether it be friendship or full out romance. The moments that strike me hardest are the places where 'love goes wrong': where it's unrequited or simply the wrong time or the wrong place or just those moments where it's highly uncomfortable and awkward and feels all wrong when the status quo starts to shift. And then those quiet moments when all that disappears and it just feels right, but that moment has been earned.
My favourite stories of all have ambiguous endings and no real resolution, and I guess very little 'shippiness' at all. But just these hints and tweaks and nods to possibility in an otherwise gen story.
The characters that I cut from my tags but couldn't cut from the optional bits are very much optionaI - I only put them there in case you'd like to write them, and a) actually did offer them or b) didn't offer them in case you ended up having to write something you didn't want to write with them which and that happens to not apply here.
Being Erica
Erica Strange, Dr. Tom
I love the complicated dynamic between Erica and Dr. Tom. There are so many ways to see it, and all, I think, are true. Also, I'm caught up on the third season so a story could be set at any point in the show. :D
This is quite possibly my favourite show in all the world. The balance of 'twee' and seriousness let it explore any story, any depths, but then deal with it and move on without either trivializing the events and the impact on the characters, or becoming mired in angst and darkness. Practically speaking, this is why the show can address any situation from any angle, and never pulls a punch or avoids an issue for long.
The time traveling mess that is Erica/Kai is awesome, but my first love is Dr. Tom/Erica, under any interpretation. They've always been complicated, there's always so much just under the surface with Dr. T and every season we get hit with incredible awesomeness when the undercurrent breaks through. Season three turned everything on its head, but there is still so much to explore in the first two seasons, and this is one fandom where there is always so much speculation and potential that AU from any juncture is fascinating. Every time I turn this show on, my mind is filled with "What ifs."
Mysterious Ways
Miranda Feigelsteen, Declan Dunn
I love Miranda. And Miranda/Declan. Mostly, Miranda is my god/goddess. But I love the passion each of these characters bring to their cases, and their friendship, and would love to see anything that lets them be -them-.
I rewatched this show recently, and was struck by how incredibly amazing the dynamic is between the three leads. They all have a true friendship, with quirks and distresses and mistakes. The events they investigate enticingly open the door to any plot or thematic exploration, but they still always feel like real people who could live in this world, just around the corner.
I am unashamedly in love with Miranda. I do, in my heart of hearts ship Miranda/Declan, but really I just love Miranda. In an age where there are so many quirky characters on tv, Miranda still stands out as her own person, from her odd-but-not-over-the-top wardrobe, to the real compassion and vulnerability that lies beneath her deadpan humor and devotion to science, to the fearless curiosity that allows her to believe in the possibilities of the unexplainable even though she is a brilliant scientist.
Though I do seem to hook on to those moments that indicate of the two of them, Declan may be the one who's less honest/more confused about his feelings. :)
Power Play
Brett Parker, Colleen Blessed
Anything goes with these guys (this fandom). I cut Duff for matching purposes, though his POV on Brett/Colleen would be amazing. But I don't even care if the story in any way tries to address Brett/Colleen. Character pieces would be amazing. Literally, ANYTHING Power Play related would place me in your debt forever, because there is virtually no fanfiction in this world at all, and I can't shake the fandom from my soul.
I watched this show back when it was first on in 1998, and it has haunted me ever since. I'm drawn to any story based on an ambiguous worldview - is Parker crazy? Does he have a brain tumor? Are ghosts really visiting him? because of the way it resonates in the characters, each and every one of whom is flawed and brilliant. Hockey is a full out sport, and the behind-the-scenes picked up on that flair with a ruthless abandon tempered by sparks and streaks of humanity and doses of the absurd.
My heart will always belong to Parker/Colleen, though I'm not sure if any real resolution or ending is ever possible for them. They're too much defined by what they're not and what they can't be, either for themselves or for each other. So I'd just love to see a moment with them, that worked or didn't, or a character study of one or the other - what makes them tick? I also love Duff like whoa, and would adore to see something from his POV.
This is Wonderland
Elliot Sacks, Alice De Raey
I obsess over Alice/Elliot. I'd love to see anything where they interact/think about each other/exist in the same story, friendly or shippy. (I cut David Kaye for matching purposes, but PS I love him too.)
Problematically, I've only ever seen the first season, because I can't find the second or third anywhere for love of money *sniffs* but what I have seen blew me away. There is an energy to this world derived from the population of borderline absurd and tragic characters who find themselves caught up in the court system. Tempered by the matter-of-factness of the lawyers and judges who will be here every single day - and see many of these people again. There's a feeling that 'anything goes' merely because in real life, anything does - if you're willing to take the consequences.
I'd really love to see something with Alice/Eliott interaction, because they so rarely have scenes together. What do they think of each other, what other times have they talked, what would happen if they had to work together on a case? What do they look like when they start working out of the same offices? I'd love to see a story set in the future, or even in the second/third seasons - I'm already spoiling myself by reading reviews and summaries, so no worries on that front.
I also ship Alice/Davie Kaye, and fell in love with them at the haircut scene. Kaye simultaneously has this weariness and kindness, sense of humour and periodic pettiness that make him endlessly fascinating, and a perfect match for Alice, who is growing up in much the same direction, though on the other side of the courtroom. But I have taken him out of my requests, so I just mention him here because I can't leave him out entirely, and to say that a story where Alice, Eliott, and Kaye all appear would pretty much be the best thing ever.
