Maria Göppert-Mayer

Maria Göppert-Mayer is one of my favorite figures in physics. She's the only other woman than Mme. Curie to win the Nobel Prize in physics, and she won it for something totally awesome: the shell model of nuclear structure. She also managed to do terrific work in the face of some truly awful sexism and nepotism in the 1950s when she worked. (e.g., she couldn't get a job at the U(C) because her husband was employed there, despite the fact that she was the better scientist.)

What I didn't know until clicking on her wikipedia article today to figure out when she died: she was a total hottie.

No, really!
