Title: When the Sun Comes Out
Author: alias_lilacgirl
Rating: PG, angst
Pairing: Jack/Jack
Challenge: “I was always told it was wrong”

Jack isn't sure why he returned to the Ritz. Perhaps he was returning to the scene of the crime. Though he didn't think of it that way, even if everyone else did. It wasn't a surprise when two MPs came for him before breakfast to escort him to his commanding officer's office. At least he wasn't immediately detained for his actions, but it was clear his military career was over. A court martial will only be a formality, he would be lucky to receive just a dishonorable discharge.

Still dressed to fly the training exercise that will never be flown, Jack went to the Ritz. Curious that the doors were not locked, Jack went up to the quiet ballroom. It was eerie being there during the day. It seemed a different place without the people, the music, the life. The ballroom was like a church with its sacred silence. It was a place to think and atone for past sins.

Jack wanted to feel regret for what he had done. For dancing with James, for loving James, but he couldn't. He knew it was wrong to love a man the way he does, but with James it didn't feel wrong. It didn't feel dirty and sinful and depraved. It felt right. It felt like love. But James was gone and now his whole life was in shambles for a few perfect moments.

He should have followed James and Toshiko into the light, but he didn't. James had his duty and Jack had his, or so he thought. No, he believed. If he thought, he would know that he would never fly a plane again. But his sense of duty and loyalty outweighed a brief war romance. Unfortunately, his superiors didn't share the same beliefs.

Taking a deep breath, he tried to keep the overwhelming despair away. A small, hopeful voice was trying to convince him to track down James. It couldn't be that difficult to locate Captain James Harper of the 71st and Toshiko Sato, but he knew he would never find them. He was alone in a very uncertain world.

As his thoughts began to spiral into further darkness, a flicker of light caught Jack's attention. It came from the same spot as last night. At first, he thought his mind was playing tricks on him or maybe it was some hopeful thinking. But then the light burst open. A gateway, not to heaven nor to hell, but a passage to James. Jack calmed his nerves and steadied himself as if preparing for battle. Where he was going was a mystery. Perhaps to Africa. Perhaps the American Southwest. But he did know that his life as Captain Jack Harkness of the 133rd Squadron was over.
