413. Gadget For You: Functional or Entertainment and Peer Pressure for Blackberry ...

Nov 20, 2010 05:50

I just got back home from 2-days out-of-town work, which involved most time on a car traveling. I arrived home last night at 10 P.M., stayed awake until past midnight, and woke up this Saturday morning around 3 A.M.; Safely to say, I will probably just spend the Saturday trying to recharge my energy because I have another project tomorrow on Sunday *exhausted*

But, I miss posting in this journal (it's only been two days and I am already regressing. Gosh, I'm such an LJ-whore). For today, I have a question for ALL of my flist. This is also since I saw fly_meaway's post about purchasing a new cellular phone.

What is your current/latest cellular phone? Brand/model/type? Do you use it mainly for its functionality (phone, text message) or as entertainment (listening to music, watch video, play games, read books, etc)

I am A VERY FUNCTIONAL type of person when it comes to gadget.

I like to use gadget according to their most functionality. That is why, I prefer to have cellular phone (to make phone calls and text messaging), mp3 player (for music), Kindle (for ebook reading), and notebook (for working). Each has different function. I don't like to play games on my gadget (I prefer reading to kill time). I'm not very much into fancy gadgets too. I mean, I know how people love iPhone because it looks fancy. But for me, it's pretty pricey, and I will only use the phone and text anyway, I don't need all the games and those softwares.

Or like yesterday, a friend of mine showed her iPod Touch, which she thought was fancy because it could show the album art, moved it around, play gamed, write notes with QWERTY keyboard touch ... and for me, I don't need all that. It's not like I will be watching the album arts when I listen to the music. So my current mp3 player is good enough. Also when she talked about iPad, how it showed the book covers arranged on virtual shelf, so it felt like a person pick the book right from the shelf. I just thought, man, I only need a reader device. It's not like I'm watching the cover when I read it while I'm mobile. Nothing can beat print books anyway, if I want to keep sneaking on the book cover.

One device that is a HUGE hit in Indonesia is Blackberry. People just LOVE using the Blackberry Messenger. For me, though, Blackberry seems to create an closed society and makes people not socializing the way they should. I mean, the users create this group for them, and they announce news/gossips/important information and such through Blackberry group. SO, if a person wants to get the information, he/she MUST have a Blackberry (so they can join). That's simply peer pressure. And in a way, rather "elitist".

AND, I can count so many times where I encounter a scene, where two friends (or more) who are actually together, do not really speak to one another because they are busy checking their Blackberry Messenger. Or this one time -- a scene that actually makes me very sad -- a kid was trying to get her mother's attention and to talk but the mother just ignored her child because she was busy checking her Blackberry. Or yesterday, when I was with a friend of mine ... I enjoyed the beautiful scenery that my country offered, but she was busy checking her Blackberry ALL the way through. Such SAD scenes, aren't they?

So, how about you?
