Hi, everyone. I wanted to just update everyone on how Shane is doing. When I went to see him about an hour ago during visiting hours, he was feeling nauseous and was in excruciating pain. He had an x-ray this morning, and his lungs don't look good at all. He's starting to develop pneumonia, so they will be keeping him in ICU until at least Friday. He needs to cough in spite of his broken ribs, and he hasn't been able to effectively. However, his concussion seems to be gone. He's starting to remember what we did over the weekend althought he doesn't remember much of the accident.
(here's what happened in detail)
On Sunday night at around 9:00, we were driving home from Manchester (where his parents live). We got to A&M and were almost home, but the emergency signal for the fire station in front of A&M on North Parkway was red and fire trucks were starting to come out. We stopped. We were stopped for several seconds and Shane and I jokingly made the comment that they were taking their good old time. That's when we heard this big crash. I remember screaming, but that's about it. It took me several seconds to realize what had happened. Supposedly when the car stopped, I hurt but I looked over at Shane. The airbag had deployed, and he could barely talk. His seat was all the way back, and they had to cut him out of the car. Before they could do that, however, I had to get out. As soon as I did, I started to pass out and started noticing neck pain, so I was put on a stretcher. They had to take Shane and me to Huntsville Hospital in separate ambulances since I guess you can't fit two stretchers in one vehicle. We were taken to opposite ends of the ER; he was in trauma ER since they had to cut him out of the car. I was released from the ER after about 2 hours with a minor concussion. I immediately went to see Shane. He was lying on the stretcher and was asking the same questions over and over again (What happened? Where am I? What's wrong with me? Is Tammy okay? Am I married? What day is it? Let me see your hand. (he wanted to make sure we were married)) He didn't remember the weekend, but he remembered who everyone was, luckily. He kept his sense of humor throughout the entire night, though. We then found out that his left ulna was fractured and that he had 6 broken ribs. The concussion was obvious. Ever since they took him to ICU Monday morning at 4:30, he had been progressively getting better, until today.
We got the accident report back yesterday. What happened during the crash is that we were the last car in the left lane. We were hit by a Ford Explorer at 60-70 mph. The speed limit was 50. She hit us in the back on the driver's side, which sent us into the right lane, hitting another car. Our car and that car spun and traveled several feet off the road and ended up back on the road facing the opposite direction. After the Explorer hit us, she hit the car in front of us, sending that car in the median. She went into the median, but ended up on the road facing the opposite direction. Four cars were involved altogether. I went to see the car, and it's amazing that we made it out alive. It is nothing short of a miracle.
Shane still has a lot of healing to do, and there's no telling when he'll be out of the hospital. Even when he gets out there's so much that he'll need help with. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. They are very much appreciated.
