But It's Usually "Sympathy For The Devil" This Show Puts In My Head!

New OUaT!

Overall, I enjoyed this one, although so far I'm still finding Gideon somewhat less than fully satisfying as a character. Seeing bits of his backstory did maybe help make him a bit more interesting, but not as much as I might have hoped (even if they do leave open some interesting possibilities for him). The flashback scenes could have been so much more effective, I think. Yes, it's clear that dear old Granny is a grade-A fairy dickhead, and that life with her was unpleasant, but there's nothing here that remotely evokes the atmosphere of unimaginable hardship he keeps alluding to, certainly not in a way that made me feel it. The revelation that she has his heart and that he's under her control, however, is one I wasn't really expecting (although I wasn't too surprised when it looked like he was maybe voluntarily working with her), and it explains a lot of things that seemed not to make any sense of his behavior.

Various other random things:

Man, I never expected to like Hook anywhere near as much as I currently do. He's just consistently great. The plan to get back was really clever (even if it didn't work), and his bantering with Blackbeard was lots of fun.

I wonder if we'll get to see more of Neverland next week? I'm mildly interested to see how things have gone in Pan's absence.

Granny BF gets the best line of the episode: "That's on you, Gideon. And on my boot." (Or was it "shoe?" I forget the line. And also what kind of footwear she had.) By the way, that bit read as a nice, subtle callback to a newly Dark One'd Rumple turning that guy into a snail and crushing him.

Glad to hear Regina freed the Dragon from the mirror world, even if it was in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it throwaway line. I also loved the "don't ask" followup about freeing Dr. Dolittle from a cage. I always love it when the show gives the sense that interesting things are happening off-screen as well as on.

It was also kind of nice to see Isaac again. I really do like how this season has made a point of checking in on past characters. No idea what's going on with Henry, but "the last chapter" sounds really ominous. And all the more so in light of vague rumors I've heard about possible cast changes and some sort of revamping of the series for next season. The previews for next week don't make me feel any less nervous, either.
