Year-End Fandom Meme

Dec 31, 2014 00:29

At some point, I will do a year-end fic roundup meme thingy, but I want to wait until after Yuletide reveals, so I can include everything. In the meantime, here is a year-end fandom meme, which I have nabbed from selenak.

Your main fandom of the year? Gotta be Once Upon a Time. Who would have imagined that a couple of years ago?

I've been missing Farscape, too. This morning, I got out the DVDs and slotted the first one into the player - it feels lovely to have the series playing in the background while I do New Year's Day preparations.

I was so proud of Belle, too, and the show for letting her see what's going on, and to act on it. :)

Aww, ending the year with a little Farscape sounds lovely.

I must say, Doctor Who is a show that never caught on with me. What glimpses I had of it left me thinking, "Lame!" But Every. Smart. Person. On. My. Flist watches this show. So I am throwing it into the marathon pile for next year.

Oh, Doctor Who, show of my heart, the unconditional fannish love of my life. The thing about Who -- well, one of the things about it, anyway -- is that even if it's watched by a lot of smart people, it's not designed, first and foremost, to appeal to the intellect. It's a show that's aimed straight at the heart of your inner child, designed to slip right past your adult defenses with its good-heartedness and sense of wonder and exciting adventures and sheer goofiness. And, yeah, it brings some stuff that appeals to the adult part of your brain along with it, but if it doesn't hit the little kid in you, it mostly doesn't work, I think. For some people, it just never does. But, in my experience, often all it needs the chance.

I'll be very much looking forward to seeing the results of your marathoning, and whether it ends up working for you or not. Are you going to start with the beginning of New Who?

I was going to do a post asking Whovians for advice on that--lots of old Who on Netflix. Should I start with that, or would it throw me off?

This is a tough question, and I suspect you might get a variety of different answers. My usual advice, actually, is to start at the beginning of New Who. It's deliberately designed to be accessible for new fans. Yes, there is a lot of continuity with the classic series, but it's mostly stuff that you'll get if you're familiar with it but won't even notice if you don't. And while there will often be a sense that the Doctor has a lot of history with some particular person or species or whatever, you don't actually need to know any of the details; what you're shown is enough to get the general idea perfectly well. And, of course, if you ever are curious about the backstory to something, there are always plenty of people to ask ( ... )

My best new fandom discovery was the Librarians. Very few series grab me from episode 1. My only disappointment is Flynn leaving to find the Library, still if he keeps coming back for the occasional episode I'll be happy.

I haven't seen that. In fact, I hadn't even heard of it until very recently. But the title alone is enough to catch my interest.

You might want to start with the very first movie, The Librarian. I was just thinking that some of the same things attract me to it as to DW: a sense of wonder and some just downright goofy glee that do seem to carry to a whole new set of characters. I've only seen the premiere and half the second episode, but I'm liking the new people.

Oh, hold on, this series was based on a TV movie? OK, I think I actually did see that, ages ago. If it's the one I'm thinking of, I remember it being ridiculous and cheesy, but rather fun, in that better-than-it-has-any-real-right-to-be way.

Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice
I'm reading this largely on your rec-and my gosh, it's good!

the disturbing unintentional subtext about psychiatric drugs being bad
That bothered me a lot.

I'm loving Capaldi. I know what it's like to have trouble getting over a previous Doctor-I think that interfered with my enjoyment of Matt Smith, despite the fact that I thought the Tenth Doctor's final seasons, with those movies, was terrible and definitely meant it was time for that one to regenerate!

I think I'm not as big a Master fan as you, but Michelle Gomez is amazing, and I sure hope we'll be seeing her Mistress again!

Isn't it? The second book is great, too. (And I'm very glad that turned out to be a good rec for you! Although I didn't really doubt it would be.)

That bothered me a lot.

I gather the writer of the ep has since gone on record saying it wasn't intentional, and being polite and apologetic when it was pointed out to him how it reads. Which is very much to his credit. But, man, I really wish someone, somewhere in the process of making that ep, had taken a step back and gone, "Hang on a moment..."

I know what it's like to have trouble getting over a previous Doctor

What's really funny is that, despite having been a fan of the show since I was about fifteen, this is the first time I've felt that anywhere near that strongly. Usually I'm sorry to see the previous guy go, but philosophical about changes and eager to see how the new one is going to pan out. I don't know why this time is so different for me, or why I glommed on so strongly to Matt Smith, but I did. And ( ... )
