So, I've just finished re-watching the third and final season of Forever Knight. And, man, I really wish there were some commentaries on these discs, because I don't think I have ever found myself wondering so frequently or with such genuine bemusement, "What the heck were they thinking?"
Mind you, I'm not even sure what I'm thinking. I've never been able to decide whether I love or hate the way this show ends. (Although at this point I suspect that's because it's an ending that could have been awesome, if there had only been more of the proper buildup for it.) Honestly, I even go back and forth from episode to episode on the question of whether it's a good show or a bad one. It's certainly got issues. Oh, so many issues... The melodrama. The cliches. The somewhat muddled vampire mythology. The way it seems to want us to think that it's condemning violence towards women at the same time it's presenting it as titillating. (Hoo, boy, is that an issue.) The way it introduces a whole bunch of new characters in season three and then fails to do anything whatsoever with them. The sheer number of times the writers appear to have said "Oh, fuck it, let's just kill people" towards the end. The weird way that some of the most interesting things it does are also the cheesiest things it does.
And yet, this show kinda-sorta had something. Even if, mostly, what it had was Nigel Bennett. Hell, having Nigel Bennett might actually be enough.
Damn, now I really want to read some good LaCroix fic. (Have I mentioned that I seem to have this weird thing for twisted and angsty parental-type relationships and the father figures therein? Um... yeah.)
