Young lady, in this house we obey the law of perpetual motion!

All this nice weather is not good for me.

I’ve run 26 miles in the last three days and my legs are starting to rebel. Still, the sunshine makes it irresistible, though I certainly have more than enough to do. I’m working on my 10-page Modernism paper (A Passage to India, which would be fine in itself except it has to be interdisciplinary, and I realize I know very little about things that aren’t English, with the exception of Chemistry which really doesn’t apply in this instance. So I’m frantically trying to learn things about Religion and History and Psychoanalysis and incorporate them into my analysis of Forster. Scary, but at least it has a good title: “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”). I’m also doing my third round of Econ papers, my Art History assignment, Moby-Dick/Scarlet Letter paper and the first three chapters of my novel project for Roddy, polished and edited (which is fun, but still stressful. I’m thinking of changing the title from The Orphan’s Father to The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring (G&S shout-out!), but I don’t like that one much either. Opinions? We’ll see.) Plus, application for the Creative Writing Concentration, Chem Papers, a revised grant proposal…blah. I just want to run.

CUBS WIN!!!! finally.

There is exciting news since the last time I updated (though I’ve talked to some of you since then, in various ways.) I’m living in New York this summer and working for Oxford University Press in their Young Adult Reference Department. Purely grunt work, but at least I’m in on the ground floor. I’m trying to arrange my classes for next semester so I’ll have Thursdays free to intern somewhere else. It feels good to have some kind of future. And I should be in Chicago for about five weeks, all told. I think it’s a pretty good balance. I’m waiting to hear back on money to see if I need a *real* job as well. My sincere thanks to mboyd for her expert advice and generous support in this area.

I didn’t write a summary of connexions because I’m lazy, but also because I just got kinda swamped in work and holidays when I got back (it was something of an indulgence for me, and I did very little while I was there…school-relevant, that is), but it was excellent to meet so many people and to revel in slashy goodness. I enjoyed the panels, the parties and dinner outings, the library, and just catching up with people. So, ardent_muses, bluster, carlacoupe byob_kenobi, katyabaturinsky ndannais, reginagiraffe, sithdragn, and, especially, shayheyred, my escort and janeterry and wolfdancer, my roommates-thanks for the memories! To everyone else, what can I say? Perhaps, next year in Baltimore?

My laptop’s doing strange things like powering down after two seconds off AC power even though it should be fully charged and closing down Microsoft Word without provocation. About a week ago, when I was trying to email my story to my writer’s workshop, the blasted machine thought it would be amusing to restart every 60 seconds. In Mission: Impossible-esque style (sorry, but it just didn’t seem very MFU) I was able to open my email account, attach the document, write a quick message, and send the file as the seconds ticked down to one; I did not even leave 0:07. It was more amusing in retrospect. I was so afraid the thing was going to have a total breakdown while the bro was in Germany, but it’s avoided that step thus far, bless its mechanical heart. The kid’s a genius, but I was born in the wrong century (or decade, at least). Any ideas?

I’m behind on fannish reading, writing and correspondence. And there’s such great stuff out there. Soon.

All right, back to studying. :-)
