During a recent viewing of My Fair Lady, I realized that I previously did not understand some parts of the songs. Not because they were particularly complicated concepts or anything, I just misunderstood the words. And it's funny, because I remember thinking that some of the lyrics didn't make any sense. Turns out that they actually they make perfect sense, I'm just very slow on the uptake.
So that made me feel like a complete idiot.
But it also reminded me of some funny anecdotes from my family. While listening to Journey in the car at one point, we found out that my mom had been living in the false belief that one line from the song Separate Ways was "Great ghosts chase and find you." The real line, in case you were wondering, is "Break those chains that bind you." My mother is many things, but one of them is ridiculous. Her youngest sister later confessed that she had been singing the chorus to Jungle Love by the Steve Miller Band ("Jungle love is driving me mad, it's making me crazy") wrong for a long time (see subject line for her version).
Families are funny that way.
Last night I discovered and attempted an old-school method of curling your hair without rollers or a curling iron. The idea is over a hundred years old--rag curls. Basically you take strips of fabric or rag, roll your wet hair in them, and let your head dry overnight while you sleep. There is a tutorial on how to do it
here. There's also a video on how to do it
here, although youtube has lots of other examples.
Some of the curls came out really well, but I wish I had done them farther up my head because the curls just kind of start around my ears. Also I figured out too late that the back of my head wasn't completely dry, likely because I was sleeping on it. Possibly I did them too tight also, because the ones around my face look a lot more dramatic than the rest of my head.
Also I just didn't have all the tools I needed to section out my hair properly. I think it will come out better next time. Honestly, it's just hard to do my own hair. I need more practice with it. But it was a fun experience. I might use it for a Halloween costume idea I have.
