in more important news -- New York State lgbt marriage

May 13, 2009 18:09

I am taking a break from angsting over tonight's Idol results show to ask any folks in NY state to take a second on a more important voting-related cause -- our state assembly has passed a same-sex marriage bill \o/, and now it goes to the State Senate, which is only Dem by the thinnest of razor-thin margins, with several conservative members ( Read more... )

I have been praying you would discover the wonder that is Kradam/Krisbert.
Last week Kris had one of his nails painted. And Adam told People that he loves Kris.

:D

you think you have it bad, you got me hooked on Cookleta after the show *ended* last year! And I never watched AI! Thank God for Cook and the tour. That was the slashiest thing ever. I expected them to end it with a proposal. And to add to the happy-making, they are reuniting in Manila as we speak!! :D :D

Back to the Kradam: don't fight it. How could you? Those guys are always hugging and proclaiming their love for each other. Kris' faceplant into Adam's chest when he was safe last week; Adam's blurb in People about loving Kris; Kris' family shouting at last night's performance that *they* love Adam.

My favorite thing is there an interview from Top 4 week where Allison and Gokey were talking about performing or whatever, and Kris and Adam both kept talking about being roommates and what it was like living together, sharing the domestic stories...

:And five stories you say? :rubs hands together gleefully:

The queerer he gets, the more formidable he becomesYeah. Great, great quote. I read something somewhere I really thought was insightful, too, to the effect that even though Adam isn't the first gay entertainer, nor the first gay Idol candidate (though he *is* the first one who's out (though the "out" thing is of course controversial)), he *is* the first one who isn't "safe." His sexuality is up front and out there. And this seemed so right to me -- he doesn't hide the fact that he's a sexual being, nor the fact that he's male. Nor the fact that he, uh, likes tight pants. *g*. He's not a "safe" gay guy. And yes, that makes him even more formidable. So awesome ( ... )

Ah! Thank you for linking to this form. I hadn't heard yet that the bill passed the Assembly.

\crosses fingers/ Come on, New York, come on!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed about the bill and will use your link to contact my State Senator. I'm tempted to ask my Dad (who was a lobbyist in Albany for years) if he knows best who to contact, etc but since he's a fundie who's opposed to gay marriage I doubt he'd help.

In this coming week's TV Guide they talk about Adam being gay as a matter of fact (as opposed to EW, who said he didn't confirm what most suspected). I found that interesting. Maybe TV Guide just sucks at getting facts (ie they thought he was fully out) or maybe EW is just more conservative and without a direct, current quote from Adam they refused to go there. In any case, it's pretty much out there to mainstream America that a fully functional, unneutered gay man is a top contender on America's top TV program. That's got to mean something.

I actually really love that the Guide is doing that. I mean...I have some issues with people -- not you, I've just seen this on my flist and on the TWoP forums -- saying that Adam should "just come out already." Which, I would already consider him waaaaaaaaaay Out. I think we as a culture mentally equate publicly coming out with Ellen's famous cover and spread in People magazine, and it sort of depresses me that that's what it takes to be "officially" out. I think we're so accustomed to celebrities denying it like crazy that it takes a six-page spread blared over a major media outlet for us to be like, Okay, yeah, that counts, he's Out now. And that's sad.

I'd far prefer it to just quietly become part of our national consciousness, without grand declarations or massive interviews. But that's probably pretty unrealistic of me. There are always going to be the Youtube commenters screeching that NO HE'S NOT GAY and the media outlets who dangle around the IS HE OR ISN'T HE innuendo. *sigh*

Sorry, that got really long. *waves*

Oh I agree completely that there's something wrong with the media/our culture expecting him to spill his guts as a way to let people know he's gay. He's been out, he's never tried to "in" himself - shouldn't that be enough? Why do we as a culture want people to shout every emotion and personal information from the rooftops? [Although I admit to liking Neil Patrick Harris's way of dealing with it, which was a brief note saying to the effect that despite rumors to the contrary, he's really not straight.]

OTOH, I also see the point of some people in the gay community who think that if he comes out publicly in such a prominent TV position that that supports the gay community more than simply being out without pushing it publicly.

It's one of those questions - at what point is being gay accepted by mainstream culture enough to not require people in public positions who are gay to declare it as a way to make it more acceptable?

* require is too strong a word because no one should be required to do anything like that that they aren't comfortable with.
