who sleeps where in SPN

So monster_of_hope wrote me because she noticed that I had the line

Dean put his stuff down on the bed nearer the door, like always.

in Bad Company, and she'd written

Dean tossed a bag onto the queen bed closest to the door, putting himself between whatever was out there and Sam.

in her recent story (Hopeful Monster, which I highly recommend), and was ( Read more... )

ok, you're awesome and I love you ♥

added to that, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is that in Playthings, the way I looked at the room it was set up like when you walked in the door the beds were on the left and the opposite wall to your right. that wall is the one with the creepy wedding dress hanging on it, and when Dean sort of backs up and sits/falls onto the bed like he does I automatically thought of that being the one closer to the door. Also, later when Sam is drunk his bed looks more toward the back corner of the room to me. The bar toward the front corner, Sam's bed across from it to the back. I think you can even see a wall against the right side of his bed (from our vantage point.)

Unless, you know, Dean pushed Sam down into HIS bed and that's why Sam tries to make out with him. Which could TOTALLY BE THE CASE.

I am looking at it again right now, I am so sad.

That first scene when Sherwin is shaming Dean into a tip -- Sam goes towards a bed that is relatively far off to the left and starts putting his stuff down. Behind Dean's back you can see the tall windows and the funky table lamp.

Then we have Dean staring at the wedding dress on the wall, and to his left there is a brass footboard and the daylight is coming from the left, and the room door is off in the wall on his right. Then Dean turns around and walks back, past the first bed, and goes fwomp on the second bed further from the door, with the lamp visible to the right of the bed.

Except that farther bed is the bed that Sam was dumping stuff on when they first came into the room.

And when he comes back after the lawyer guy is hanged, Dean totally does push Sam down on the bed nearer the door, which is right near the chair Sam was sitting in. So, I TOTALLY think you are right and it is Dean's bed, and Dean put Sam into it to sleep. \o/

This always reminds me of the SPN fanon that Dean always goes through doors first, except I don't think it *is* fanon -- every time I pay attention, Dean *is* the one going through doors first. It makes sense to me as part of his general protectiveness.

But, you know, if someone wanted to carefully check the episodes to see if Dean *does* go through doors first and provide visual evidence, I wouldn't *mind*.

To sidetrack - when I was doing self defense classes, our trainer told us that you always let the perceived weaker/the one in need of protection through the door first because if they go down you have a chance to take out the threat and treat the person that was knocked out. If you walk into a room first with no idea of the level of threat and you get taken down, that's it for you and the person you are trying to protect.

Actually, I still totally buy Dean going through first anyway, because I don't think this is an intellectual/rational thing for him -- he seems perfectly confident in Sam's fighting ability, seeing how they split up all the time. Rather I think when he sees Danger --> Sam, his automatic impulse is to make it Danger --| Dean |--> Sam.

♥ Dean.

Danger --> Sam, his automatic impulse is to make it Danger --| Dean |--> Sam.

The above need to be icon'd! :-D But yes, agreement because protecting Sam is built into Dean, and he would run right in front of Sam and danger because it is Dean and anything that Dean perceives/sees as a threat will be dealt with, or distracted from Sam - e.g. Dean purposely getting the YED's attention during 'Devil's Trap'. And yes! Dean's trust in Sam ['Benders' still has one of the best moment - Dean choosing Sam over the female detective, whose name escapes me, because he implicitly/explicitly trusts Sam to be able to take care of himself if given a fighting chance. I LOVE them so much.]

Seconded on the ♥ Dean!

and i just realised I got completely off track, I can't help it the Winchesters has ate most of my brain. My original comments about the walking into the room first was more of a general statement.

So, I was kind of curious about this, so I went and looked at a few episodes. Then I got more geeky, and the following list resulted, of times that the Winchesters hunted (or went into potentially dangerous situations) together. I don't include things like them entering hotel rooms, just instances where it seems to matter who's on point. The list got long enough that I actually had to break it into two comments ( ... )

Man, I love this fandom. We are all such geeks! ♥! I'm not sure how much of what I learned actually applies to Sam and Dean, mainly because I do think that Dean would step in front of any danger to Sam, even if he knows it is the dumb thing to do because it is Dean. But the thing is Dean is also highly aware of the fact that Sam can take care of himself [points to 'Benders'], so it is not so much as tagging himself as weak so much as - Dean steps in between danger and Sam for several reasons - 1) Take down whatever is coming at them before it reaches Sam, 2) If Dean doesn't win, he's providing a chance for Sam to fight, for Sam to figure out a game plan, and 3) For Sam to run, which of course Sam would never do, but Dean is a bit oblivious at times ( ... )
