insta-rec: The Prestige

Okay, the prize goes to whoever nominated this movie for Yuletide sight-unseen. Seriously, go see it! Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are terrific, but they are not even the real stars of the movie -- the real star is the smart, fun, twisty script, which is just so well-written and clever that you would walk out incredibly satisfied if the acting ( Read more... )

David Bowie ruled that movie! *G* I enjoyed myself, I saw the twists coming way in advance, I thought there were a few too many obvious clues revealed, but it was fun to watch everything play out. And you are so right about the cast being wonderful.

David Bowie ROCKED the house. And I totally didn't see the twin twist coming, although I got the others -- although I didn't mind getting them! I think because the script had so much setup for each one that even if you got it ahead of the "official" reveal, they were still paying off a lot of stuff. Like, it became the fun of watching the dominos that had been painstakingly set up all tumble down in a row, and not necessarily the fun of a big omg! surprise.

I have been listening to David since I got home, I had totally forgotten what an amazing musician that man is as well. Labyrinth really warped me as a child *G*.

Anyway, I thought it was rather cool that the final trick was revealed in that first scene. The whole range of emotions I went through was an interesting ride as well. I started out feeling bad for Jackman's character and not caring for Bale's too much. As the story progressed, I grew to really dislike them both!

And I had to turn my eyes away from the finger scene near the end *G*.

Easily one of the most interesting movies I have seen in a long time, I am still trying ot process it and have the feeling that it is going to take a few days.

*snickers* Someone on my flist pointed out that this movie is Wolverine seeking out the Goblin King and his minion Gollum in order to defeat Batman.

Ooh, I'm so glad it's good--I've been wanting to see it since I saw the ad. I, uh, bought the novel today just based on the pretty commercial. *blushes*

Any chance you're like me and you started mainlining reading as soon as you picked it up? I'm making my regular bookstore pilgrimage tomorrow, but I don't want to wait to check it out! *stamps foot and pouts. not at all like a six year old.*

I loved it- identity, obsession, and deception hit all the right buttons for me. The twins, the journals, that long moment when the camera lingered on all those top hats...

One thing we couldn't quite decide on at our house- what do you think Jackman's motivation was in putting on that final series of shows? Was the murder trial just lagniappe on top of that last trick that could never be topped or did he deliberately set out to frame his rival?

Sorry for sticking my nose in, but I thought that was for revenge mostly, setting it up like so, knowing that Broden will go down below stage to see the trickery in the escape hatch, and to see how he died like his wife did. So, the latter, mostly.

That's what I thought at first, that it was intentional, but now I'm not so sure. Because how did he know which night was the one not to do the prestige up on the balcony? He had his eyes closed while the volunteers checked out the machine and he built up his courage, so he couldn't have seen anything then. Was he counting on being able to hear his enemy shouting for help?

I'll bud in too...actually he limited the number of performances and then did it every night. He used the machine and died but his double went on the next night. His line went something like...when he used the machine each night he didn't know if he would be the one in the prestige or the one in the box...meaning one of the doubles died every time. So yeah that is dedication to an obsession alright!

We saw this Friday & reall enjoyed it. All the actors did a great job. I really liked Bowie's performance. It wasn't overplayed at all. Lovely pacing and plotting. The movie just flowed so well.

I totally guessed the twin twist, but I think it was because I spent so much time making my Batman Begins that I could pick out Christian Bale's mouth through any disguise.
