Somebody tried to kill me today.
Oh, I'm sure it was nothing personal, just one of the usual run of idiots too engrossed in his cellphone conversation, newspaper or breakfast to be bothered with actually paying attention to driving...
There I was, happily trundling along in the left-hand lane just south of Chester, when suddenly there was a car in half of my lane, and getting closer by the second. I quite naturally tried to get the hell out of the contested lane - I know "solid" matter is mostly empty space, but unlike the estimable Dr. Banzai, I've never managed to drive through it. Since the "shoulder" there is about a foot wide, I found myself on a steep grassy slope, trying frantically to avoid the end of the guardrail. My car and I came to rest at the bottom of the grassy median, both of us apparently none the worse for the experience. I took a few minutes to get the shaking under control, then came in to work.
The guy who ran me off the road never even slowed down. I spent a few minutes fervently wishing he might make a closer acquaintance with a bridge abutment.
I swear this commute is gonna kill me some day...
life,
near miss
