So, I haven't updated in, like, forever... but now I am!
Really, I have nothing I particularly want to talk about because I hate feeling like an emo LJ lamer. So I will tell you about my latest project.
Scott can vouch for me on this... when I start a project, it stays started. That is to say, it rarely makes it to "finished" But this (I hope) will be an exception because part of my grade depends on it. And now the story begins:
In senior studio a few weeks ago, my prof, Raymond, said that I should make a pornographic comic book. He has, on several occasions, as have other people, compared me to R. Crumb. When I really took a look at some of Crumb's stuff, I realized there were good odds this was an insult. I digress.
I thought about the suggestion, at first dismissively. I really don't want to out and out plunge into the murky depths of the pornographer. But I did a bit of research. In this case, research was buying a few of the cheaper adult comics from BudPlant, a great online comic and art shop. So they arrive, and I read over them. Tripe. Some drawn ok, probably better than I could do, but the stories are utter garbage. I mean, yeah, it's porn so bad plot is expected, but when you're drawing each panel and not just having some floozy read a few lines poorly, you think they'd put a bit more effort into it.
The seed of my idea had been this: Porn is always choreographed very well. The girl turns just like this, they change positions just like that, perfect blowjobs, perfect orgasm, perfect dismount. Anyone with a scrap of sexual experience will tell you this is not the case in 99% of the sexual encounters a person has in their life. So I want my comic book to be about that. The bad stuff. The misfires, pain, and embarassment of sex. The HUMOR of it. How does this relate to the bad porn plots? How do I quickly leap into sex scenes without the "plot" of "I hear you nave a nice room. Let's go see it." How do I make fun of porn without falling into some of its own problems? Then the idea hit me. It's slightly far fetched, but when you look at some other comics, it's about average. Two friends, a guy and a girl, are transported to a pornographc realm. I look at it as the archetype of porn. It's not porn movies you see, but it's where the ideas came from. The horny neighbor, the slutty schoolgirl, the hot nurse, they're all there. And the friends are stuck. The guy is all for his new home since he doesn't get much action, but since he doesn't get much action, he stinks in bed. He stinks bad. Recklessly bad. Ride in an ambulance bad. The girl is... not repressed... but she doesn't really want to get screwed by every tom, dick, and hairy that comes along. She's slightly women's lib. She's well adjusted. So they cause problems and basically want to get home. It's almost a story about a quest. In my head, they assemble a ragtag party and strike out to find a way home. It'll be satire, a parody of porn in general, an all around good time that's fun for the whole family, 18+ years of age, provided the kids and parents read in different rooms.
Let me stress that it is not a porn comic. Pornography aims to excite and arouse. My book, while adult due to breasts, vaginas, and huge throbbing cocks, will not be arousing. It's an adult comic, just not porn.
And issue one is due a week from Friday.
