What's the last seriously five-dollar word you've used.

While critiquing a submission for my fiction writing group, I asked an author if his character was using a certain gesture apotropaically or not.

That's right. Seven syllables all up in that bitch.

I'm looking for a word that describes the phenomenon of basic, elementary common knowledge going unknown by individuals of our population.  These are otherwise educated (mostly, okay...sometimes) people who either are not aware of certain simple facts and details of life that are already known to 99% of the rest of the population by early childhood ( Read more... )

How do you feel about someone using the word "niggardly", assuming the context is correct?

Do you think it is likely to be misconstrued as racist or would enough people grasp that it's has nothing to do with race?

Bonus points for less common ones as lots of people are annoyed by the there/their and your/you're stuff.

Wtf. "Jewellery" is actually a legitimate way to spell "jewelry"? I googled it after I saw the tag on the earrings entry below. Is that a non-American thing? Or just a somewhat archaic spelling? Or it's not archaic but it's just not well known? O_o

I am looking it up, but I'm only finding the word written in Chinese, and I'd like to know how it is pronounced. :)
