Very paranoid traveling question

I have an international flight scheduled to depart from New York at 1:30 a.m. on June 20. Immediately after we get off the flight we are launching into a group tour, although we're landing at 7:30 p.m. so we'll probably all just go back to the hotel and maybe eat dinner together but do nothing else the first day. I don't have an itinerary but I assume I will be sent one while I'm still stateside...at least, I hope.

I need to be at JFK at 9:30 p.m. on June 19, and catch an independent flight from home to NY. I was thinking if I allowed myself a landing time of about 4:00 p.m. I would be okay even if there were delays.

But then I had a really paranoid thought: this is summer, and flights are often delayed because of storms. What if I miss the flight somehow because my earlier flights are delayed several hours but the international flight isn't?

Do you think I should schedule my flight super early (possibly even the day before) just in case this does happen, or do the odds of it happening seem small?

Because I think if I missed the flight I wouldn't even bother trying to get another flight and catching up with a tour, especially if I don't know where exactly the tour group is going to be at any given time.
