My thoughts exactly. It's not to hard, even though the cat won't like it.

The dental treats may get eaten if they are the only food available between scheduled feedings.

Lots of cats won't tolerate having their teeth brushed. If it wasn't done to them as a kitten, they're not likely to take too well to it.

Cats, just like any other pet, need to have their teeth cleaned. Not doing so can lead to serious problems, many of which can cause bad breath. If you don't feel up to it, take your kitty to the vet and they will gladly do it.
Don't be a stupid pet owner.

See if your vet carries CET Aquadent. It's a water additive that kills a significant amount of the bacteria in water, hence helping keep kitties mouth clean. It's no substitute for a good cleaning, but it may be worth shelling out the money for a dental then using the Aquadent to keep it from getting bad again.

My cat eats dry cat food and I've never had to brush his teeth before. I've noticed that his breath starts to smell if he spends a lot of time out of the house, i.e. away from the water bowl. Maybe your cat just needs more water?

If she's a rescue cat, I would have the vet at least check out her mouth to rule out any abcesses, broken teeth, or major tarter buildup. A general checkup would cost you some where in the range of $25 to $45 depending on the vet. If you don't do at least a tooth checkup, then you are NOT a responsible owner. It's only fair to your cat to make sure that the odor isn't also being caused by something that can cause your cat PAIN ( ... )

On the subject of general cat dental care, not just the breath issue, one possible thing is to not use plastic food and water dishes. For some reason not many vets mention that, even though many cats have allergies that will cause inflamed gums from eating/drinking out of plastic bowls.
