Never, it's a total non-event to my parents. They behave no differently towards me and my wife then they do to my brother and his girlfriend.
Sounds to me like your friend's mums is hyper aware of the gay suicides lately and worried about your friend, or shes trying to convince herself that she's ok with it.
No, but they do make a point of telling me every random gay-related thing they hear about. Like my mom clipped out all these articles about Rachel Maddow for me when her show first came on (despite the fact that we'd never once even mentioned Rachel Maddow in conversation.) It's pretty cute, really.
My grandmother does that to me, and I'm not even gay. She knows I have a lot of gay friends, so she thinks I know or what to know about everything gay ever.
I'm not gay but my mom feels like she has to keep asking me if I am "because you know I'd be supportive. I have friends who are gay, and I still love them..." so I feel partially qualified to explain why some parents go the Insano version of Yay for the Gay. They never had to figure out how to be supportive of their heterosexual kid, but now there is a wrench in that, so they are trying to figure out how to show they are supportive. It sometimes comes off as some hyperactive cartoon version of support.
