i realize that there are much more pressing issues, but this was something easy enough i could do quickly.
sent an e-mail to the company toms of maine.
this is it:

i am a vegan who recently purchased your peppermint toothpaste. the box claimed that there were no animal ingredients within it, and i took that for granted. however, with further research, i found out that propolis (a key ingredient of this toothpaste) is a substance collected by bees. i wanted to bring this to your attention because many vegans the world over would most definitely consider propolis an "animal ingredient", as i do. bees are animals and are kept in captivity in order that we may utilize them for our own selfish needs - honey being another food vegans avoid. i would request that you either remove propolis from your toothpaste recipe, or remove the words claiming the product is free of "animal ingredients". i am more than happy to buy your other, vegan-friendly, products, as i believe your company is a great one, and is one i'm happy to support... however, on behave of vegans, i can tell you we'd rather not accidentally consume what we consider to be an animal ingredient from a brand we trust. thanks for taking the time to consider this.
it'll be interesting to see how they respond to it.
at least i know not to buy the stupid toothpaste again.

on a better note, kraig is making me lunch/dinner tomorrow... soup since i'm feeling sick. i volunteered to make cupcakes (if i feel up to it).
saturday i have tea with susanna. she is going to teach me to crochet.
these are good things.
