Packaging Spotlight 035: Scent of a Woman

Apr 02, 2012 08:10

As much as I love Kim Sun-ah, Scent of a Woman was absolutely not one of the dramas I planned to watch all the way through while it was airing. I've seen plenty of cancer melodramas, and honestly, I had no desire to add yet another to the list. I figured I'd watch the first week, just so I could keep up with the initial chatter that was sure to crop up, and then kick it to the curb in place of something a little less depressing.

Somewhere between the first couple episodes, though, I quickly threw that plan out the window, and ended up eagerly awaiting each week's next installment.

It was wonderful - one of my favorite series from last year, and YA's Region 1 DVD release definitely does it justice. The packaging, as always, is well put together, with two Amaray cases containing 6 discs housed in a glossy chipboard box featuring lots of key art (even some great shots of Dr. Poopy-sook). Rather than the packaging, though, it's the special features that put this set above and beyond some of YA's other recent releases.

Scent of a Woman contains a whopping 118 minutes of extras. There's a hilarious guerrilla-style interview with Kim Sun-ah, Lee Dong-wook, and Seo Hyo-rim that shows just how 4D Sun-ah can be, a couple behind the scenes clips of Dong-wook working out that are smoking hot really interesting, and several other interviews with the leads showing their adorably dorky sides. The pièce de résistance is a full episode of Healing Camp featuring an extremely awkward Dong-wook playing games and answering embarrassing questions. So awesome!

Dr. Poopypants! I seriously love this character just as much as Ji-wook, and I know I'm not alone.

Scent of a Woman isn't an over-the-top cancer melodrama designed to break your heart and spirit. It's a beautifully heartfelt story that, yes, will sometimes bring you to tears, but will also make you laugh out loud. Rather than a depressing tale of woe, it's a life affirming romance that draws you in from the very first episodes.

Back of the box:
If you had six months left to live, what would be on your bucket list? From the stars of My Lovely Sam-soon and My Girl comes the touching Korean TV Drama Scent of a Woman, about turning death's call into a chance to live and love.

Yeon-jae (Kim Sun-ah, My Lovely Sam-soon) has spent her whole life on the sidelines, working hard and saving up to no avail. When she's diagnosed with terminal cancer, she realizes she may die without ever having lived. With her days numbered, she embarks on a journey to find herself, dream new dreams, and fill her life with purpose. She also makes her final to-do list: learn to tango, meet her idol, and fall in love.

Travel agency heir Ji-wook (Lee Dong-wook, My Girl) is so apathetic, he simply goes along with whatever his father arranges, including getting engaged to a woman he doesn't love. Life makes no difference to him, until the day he meets Yeon-jae...
