Happy birthday to Bada, a member of the former Korean girl group S.E.S. and now a solo artist, who turns 28 today!!
S.E.S. is a now-disbanded girl group that made its debut in 1997. They are known as the female version of H.O.T., a boyband of the same era who achieved similar phenomenal success.
The group formed when famed music director Lee Soo Man, of SM Entertainment, researched what teenage girls were interested in, and he formed two groups: H.O.T. and S.E.S. Bada, whose name is Korean for “sea”, was discovered first when she performed at an art school in 1996, and was chosen to become a member of the group. Eugene impressed the executives with a video she sent from Guam, where she was living at the time, and she was selected to be the second member. Finally, Shoo, the last member to be added, was the only member to do a proper audition; the record company chose her for the final member because she would fit in well with the other two. All three members came together in 1996, and they were given the name “S.E.S”, an acronym for their names.
After a year of training, S.E.S released their first album, I’m Your Girl, on the first of November, 1997, and shortly afterwards appeared in the public for the first time. The album was immediately successful, with a couple major hits, and they became one of the top selling artists in the Korea.
A year and ten days later they released their second album, SEA & EUGENE & SHOO, which sold over 650,000 copies. It featured two hit singles, “Dreams Come True” and “I Love You.” In the meantime, they prepared for a Japanese debut.
Their first Japanese single, Meguri Au Sekai, was released in October of 1998, and achieved little notable success. They followed this single with three others before releasing an album, Reach Out, all of which were unexceptional releases. A forth single was released before their third Korean album emerged in October 1999.
LOVE is their highest selling album at over 700,000 copies, and remains the highest selling album by a female group in Korea. It featured a change in style from cutesy girls to edgy artists, shift that fans enjoyed immensely.
The trio released another mildly successful Japanese single in October, followed by their sixth single in December. They also participated in the first ever SM Entertainment compilation, SM Town, for their winter album, contributing two songs.
In March of 2000 the group released a second Japanese album, which featured hit songs from their three Korean albums. After a seventh single, they released a third album, Be Ever Wonderful. These albums achieved moderate success, but like their previous singles, did not gain the same popularity as their releases in Korea.
The remained of the year 2000 say the releases of their last two Japanese singles, and in December, they released their fourth Korean album, Letter from Greenland. This album also featured a change in style, from the R&B sound that their third album possessed to jazzy music. Their style also changed to a “mature woman” look. Due to extensive promotion of the song “Show Me Your Love”, this album did quite well.
S.E.S started off the year 2001 with a Japanese singles collection in March. This would be their last Japanese release before they signed to highly popular Japanese label Avex Trax. The new label released all of their Korean albums in a Japanese version, allowing their music to be more easily accessed by Japanese fans.
They released a special album in July, entitled Surprise Album, which was a collection of their Japanese songs rerecorded in Korean. This album was slightly less successful than their other works, but still sold over 350,000 copies. This album is labeled as volume “4.5”.
In February of 2002, they released their fifth album, Choose My Life-U, which was an extreme shift from their usual looks; this album sported a more sexy style, with one of their music videos featuring the girls in dominant sexual positions. The photobook also showed the girls in provocative outfits. The musical style of the album was more centered around dance tracks, a deviation from their previous styles.
As 2002 drew to a close, S.E.S released a remix album in October, appropriately titled REMIX, as well as their sixth album, Friend, in November. This album did sell well at all, selling less 100,000 copies. In July, they had also released a compilation album, S.E.S Best, a conclusion of their career.
On December 19th, SM Entertainment announced that Eugene had chosen to leave the group and pursue solo activities. A decision to disband the group was postponed while discussions were made over contracts. Ultimately, Shoo was the only member who decided to remain with SM Entertainment, and S.E.S disbanded.
The group’s very last release was a Japanese compilation album, Beautiful Songs, along with a DVD, Brilliant Clips.
Since the debut, Bada has signed with label JIIN Entertainment and released thee solo albums of various success, while Eugene signed to Star Avenue Entertainment. Initially she focused on an acting career, but she has also released two solo albums, which sold poorly. Shoo, on the other hand, has not released a solo album, and instead has focused on performing in musicals. She is also focusing on an acting career at the moment.

KoME I don’t really know much about S.E.S’s music. I’ve only heard the one song “Dreams Come True”, which is a nice song, but not impressive or cool or catchy or anything. Just kinda there. So I uploaded that, especially since the previous Jang Ri In post took so much time. xD;
Dreams Come True
This happens to be the only song I have by them…So deal. xD; Their voices are so HIGH! It’s kind of ridiculous. I think it’s mostly edited but…why would you do that? I mean, it’s cute, but meh. Not a song to listen to all the time. It’s a cute song and very spacey and abstract. But not a personal favorite. The video is cute too, with their little girl looks, and their fairies and space stuff. Their dancing is kinda not so good but oh well.

Dreams Come True Bada (real name Choi Sung Hee), whose name means “sea” in Korean, was the lead singer of the popular female trio, S.E.S, before the group’s disbandment in 2002. Prior to becoming a member of the group, she studied Korean traditional vocal music at Dankook University. Afterwards, she signed to the Korean label JIIN Entertainment, and pursued a solo career.
Her debut album, A Day of Renew, was released in October of 2003, and sold approximately 130,000 records. Though this was comparatively low in comparison to S.E.S’s album sales, it is considered to have been fairly successful.
In September of 2004, she released her second album, Aurora, which sold a meager 24,000 copies. She took 2005 to prepare for her third album, which was released in January. This album sported a new singing style for Bada, shifting from feminine ballads to a more diverse sound. This album also enjoyed little success initially, but after the release of the album’s popular second single “V.I.P” it was released again.
Bada performed her first solo concert at the end of July, 2006. She also ventured to China for the “F1 Korean Wave Concert”, where she was well received, and her agency was bombarded with requests for her to perform again in China.
She released her first single album in November 2006, and its included video was notable for containing Bada’s own composition, “Although I Am Short”, which was written when she was only ten years old. Her next release was a second single in July 2007 called Queen, which featured an 80’s style. Neither of these singles was well promoted, and sales for both were quite low.
During 2007 Bada branched out from her singing career and participated in two musicals, Tell Me on a Sunday and Notre Dame de Paris.
She currently rumored to be working on her fourth album, which is said to be released in May 2008.

Wiki.theppn Bada has a nice voice; her range is quite large too. She can sing REAAAALLLLY high notes. :O But her voice is very pleasant to listen to and I like it quite a lot, but I haven’t hear enough from her to be a total fan.
Eyes
This is from her second solo album, Aurora. For me, this song is just old. I’ve had this song for like EVER. I think it was one of the first Kpop songs I ever download. :O It’s a catchy song, a bit repetitive, but decent. It has a sort of dance-y hip-hop style, and the video features her dancing in flashy outfits. Her vocals are decent, though she doesn’t have much of a range of notes.

(This is not a music video.) This is from the Spring Waltz OST. It’s one of my favorite songs. It’s so pretty! Soft and sweet and beautiful, Bada does a great job with this song. Her high voice is greatly suited for it. I think it’s excellent!

Moojigae Queen
This song is really powerful, especially in the chorus. It has some pretty explosive vocals. And while Bada doesn’t doe a terrible job it sounds kind of unusual. But it works. Somehow I think this song would be a bit more catchy than it is if there was just something different about it. But it is a pretty cool song. Bada does a pretty decent job, and I think she ought to be commended. I can’t say much for the music video though. The whole disco look she has frightens me. >_>;
