Title: In the Women’s Shower

Ally tried to cheer herself up. She needed to stay strong, if she wanted Billy back. Ever since they had gotten to college, he was always sniffing another girl’s bottom, or so it felt. She wondered when she stopped being enough for him.
Anyway, once she was done showering, she would head over to his dorm room, dressed up like a doll, to try and remind him of all the things he used to have but didn’t seem to care for anymore. That would be a good plan.. She could always offer to take care of his sunburn for him, he was sure to need some TLC. She laughed thinking about how the guy had always been a baby when it came to pain. He was so predictable…
What she never expected though, she would reflect upon later, was for the guy who jumped in the women’s shower, naked as the day he was born.
She yelled. What else was expected of her, really? She made sure the door to her booth was closed, even though she managed to get a glimpse at the intruder. Brown-hair, a little muscle, but nothing impressive, and brown eyes.
“Sorry,” he said with a sheepish grin when he spotted her, his hands going to cover the most sensitive part of his anatomy. “I think they’re taking hazing a little too seriously..”
“Get out!” She yelled, feeling flustered.
There was a naked man in the shower with her! Was there any protocol for this type of situation.
“Hey hey lady, you hold on for a second,” he said scowling, “I’m the one in my goddamn birthday suit when you’re hidden, so stop looking like I’m compromising your virtue or something!”
“C'ompromising my virtue?” She repeated mockingly. “What century are you from? And just get some clothes on!”
With a huff, he raised his eyes to the sky, and said:
“Where do you think I’m hiding clothes?”
“Then borrow some! Do something!”
“You really are overeating,” he complained. “You’ve seen me naked, not the other way around, so how about relaxing? And what are you doing here on a Sunday?”
“I’m showering, she said, still raised on the tip of her toes to take a good look at him. “What does it look like? And who is hazing you?”
“So you won’t toss me any towel or something?” He asked with a sheepish grin.
“Get out!” She yelled again.
His face bore an expression of complete boredom.
“Whatever”, he finally said. ‘I know I have nothing to be ashamed of.”
And he stopped protecting himself, finally starting to look around for something that would serve him as a clothe of some sort.
She put her hand over her eyes, then took it off:
“What are you implying?” She asked. “That I have something to be ashamed off? You’re wrong.”
And hoping to look much more self-confident that she really was, she came out of the shower booth to grab her towel before he spotted it.
“Wow, isn’t eating “in” anymore or something? Weirdly I thought this would never go out of fashion, but clearly I was wrong.” He told her after a very quick look at her naked form.
“How dare you!” She screamed, wrapping herself quickly in her towel. Not everybody eats enough to get chubby, you know!”
“You should just start eating, period, you barely have any flesh on.”
She felt hurt, and she hated it. She didn’t know him, why did his opinion matter to her? The man had to hit on her insecurities, going deep under her skin as he mentioned the things that scared her the most: what if Billy wasn’t interested in skinny her anymore, what if he wanted to go with fleshy women to see what it was like? She couldn’t compete, she had to eat like an ogre to maintain her current weight, which prompted Richard to often make jokes about her being preggo.
She quickly towelled off then found her flip flops to make her way back to her dorm room. Maybe going to see Billy wasn’t such a good idea anymore…
“Where are you going? Why are you leaving me here?” The man asked.
The door opened again, and this time she wasn’t surprised to see a few guys from Tau Alpha Omega, obviously drunk, and obviously in full-hazing mode.
“Newbie Larry showered with a girl on his first day, this should get him some more points!”
One of them hollered as he spotted the guy - Larry - still naked as the day he was born.
“If he showered with me,” Ally asked, coming closer to the group of student, “then how come he isn’t wet?” She pointed out, not willing to get a bad reputation over some stupid hazing.
The guy was too drunk to process what she was implying, and his only answer was:
“Oooooh, kinky!”
She left them laughing, holding her head high even though she wanted nothing more than to crawl somewhere and die. She would see Billy tomorrow, they had many classes together. For now, she would spend her day in her dorm room, trying to enjoy her Sunday and not think about what that guy had said. A man named Larry, how lame was that? What could he know?
Title: Halloween
Rating: PG-13
Pairing/Fandom: Ally/Larry, Ally McBeal

Ally smiled at all colleagues, praying to God they wouldn’t see the vacuity she was feeling. She had a love/hate relationship with Halloween office parties, there was no denying that. When she was in Boston, she used to dread them yet look forward to those, because you never knew what would be Richard’s next trick, or who Elaine would inappropriately dress as. Then again, now that she worked in New York, she had come to realize that what she considered an average day at the office was really not seen as much here. Her secretary was even a little too vanilla for her taste (she never thought she would one day feel that way, but the fact was here: she missed Elaine).
This Halloween party was kinda lame, compared to what she had seen at Cage Fish and associates, but it was not unpleasant either, if she was honest. Sure, there were too many Cleopatras for her taste, but there was no drama, no singing contest either. Maybe this was what the grown-ups’ life felt like.
She hadn’t had much time to find a costume, so she was dressed in her pyjamas, pretending to be an overgrown child. As she sipped on her alcohol-free cocktail, she found herself longing for the moment she would be able to make it home. She pretended to sway a little to the music, (Sunburn, by Muse was currently aired), counting the minutes until etiquette gave her the right to run away.
She made her way to her office when nobody was looking at her, feeling like calling Maddie to see how she was doing. She was supposed to stay with Jenny but her aunt was a little too unreliable at times.
She made her phone call and felt reassured when her daughter told her she was doing her homework with Jenny. She tried to make the conversation last longer, so that she wouldn’t have to go back to the party, but she realized how selfish it was to steal some aunt-niece time from her daughter.
When she got back to the heart of the party, she was a little surprised: she knew other firms had been invited to join them but she hadn’t expected them to show massively once the clock hit 7PM. The room was so much more crowded than when she had left it, she wasn’t sure she would be able to regain her spot hidden in the shadows. A quick look told her a couple had already stole it, claiming as their own as they started a heavy petting session. She was not surprised to recognize some of her younger colleagues, and she wondered if before, when she was their age, she would have done the same. There had been kisses exchanged in her office in Boston, that she couldn’t deny, some memories she held on very dearly, but groping sessions?
She shook her head at their antics, then tried to make herself invisible.
If there was one thing she never had foreseen, she would reflect upon later, it would have been to bump into Larry here.
But that’s exactly what happened: as she backed herself into a corner to wait for an appropriate moment to leave, she bumped quite literally into the man who had been the love of her life. He was quite surprised to see her there, but his reflex were quick and he kept her from falling by grabbing her.
He got her back on her feet, watching her like he couldn’t believe what his eyes were showing him.
He hadn’t changed. Actually, that was wrong, he had changed, everybody changed, but to her, he looked as handsome, as charming. He was just her Larry, though he hadn’t been hers in quite a long time.
“Ally?” He finally uttered with wonder.
She had random thoughts: he still used the aftershave she had given him for Christmas all those years ago. He now was sporting some facial hair, making him look ruggedly handsome. She still wanted him, like crazy. He was not wearing a costume.
“Hello Larry,” she answered, smiling sweetly.
“What are you doing here?” He asked her when he regained his train of thoughts.
“ I work here now, I moved a couple of months ago. What about you?” She asked, amazed by how calm she appeared to be when her heart was racing like mad.
“Same here. Jamie and Sam moved here a year ago, and I followed to be close to my kid.”
She was surprised by how much she wanted to kick the woman’s ass when she heard her name. Larry was not hers anymore, why did she feel so possessive of him?
“How are they?” She asked politely.
“Good, good… Jamie got married, so Sam needs to learn to live with his step dad, it’s our ongoing challenge, but otherwise everything’s fine.
She wondered if he was pissed at her for the way she childishly let him go. She knew she was still mad at herself for having been that stupid and scared.
“It’s really good to see you,’ she said, tugging on her pjs top, feeling herself blush.
“It’s weird to see you,” he answered, “but in a good way.”
“I was always good at weirdly good,” she tried to joke.
“That you were,” he agreed, drinking in the sight of her.
They remained silent for a moment, as he seemed to try and find something to say, while she was just happy to be next to him for the first time in so long.
“So, what prompted you to move here?” he finally asked. “ I always thought you would stay in Boston, and die there, surrounded by all your pals, Elaine, Richard, Renee…”
She winced painfully when she heard that name. Her heart felt tight, and she suddenly felt like she needed to get back home, that she needed to be able to hide under her covers for a little longer.
“Ally, what’s wrong?” he asked when he saw her eyes shut.
She mustered all her strength to utter the next few words:
“Renee died, six months ago. It was a robbery gone wrong, something stupid, that cost me my best friend.”
“I’m so sorry,” he said, taking her hand, in a soothing gesture.
She kept her eyes closer, willing herself not to cry, not at this party, not surrounded by strangers, but the pain she felt was overwhelming.
He led her to a less exposed spot, waiting for her to get herself together. She breathed in and out deeply, fighting the pain.
“I’m sorry, “ she said after some time. “It’s just so fresh…”
“You don’t need to apologize, I get it. Are you feeling a little better now?” He asked, still rubbing her hand soothingly.
“Not really. I can’t wait to be able to get out of here,” she confessed. “I want to crawl in bed and pretend for a moment that Renee is just a phone call away,” she smiled sadly.
“You’re already ready for bed,” he joked, gesturing for her costume.
“I totally am…”
“Those already were your favourite pjs,” he said, smiling sadly.
“Some things never change!” She answered.
They remain in silence, his hand still holding hers, and it felt good. There was no need for more words, they were just content. She idly wondered how she would tell him all those things she wanted to say: she had been a brat with him, she still loved him. She hoped he still had feelings for her beyond those of casual appreciation he was showing her. Oh ,and did she mention she was now a single mother? Silence was much easier.

Ally put down the newspaper she had been trying to read, annoyed by her inability to actually get into it.
She couldn’t help but relive the previous night, the Halloween office party. She still couldn’t believe that she had seen Larry, that he was reachable. His law firm often worked with hers, he had let her know that there would be numerous occasions for them to see each other again, and her heart couldn’t stop racing when she thought about it. She wanted to see him again, god how she wanted that. She needed Larry in her life, even if it was only in small doses.
“Hey!” Maddie said as she got out of her room, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
“Hello baby”, Ally said smiling at her daughter. “Did you had nice dreams?”
“I can’t really remember!” The teenager said, coming to sit against her mother on the couch.
Ally kissed her forehead, as the girl burrowed herself deeper against her side.
“You had a good time with Jenny last night?” She asked.
“Yeah, It was nice. I hope I didn’t wake you when I came back.”
“Nope, I was just reading, waiting for you to get back home.”
“You’re really getting the hang of being a mother!” Maddie said with a tender laugh.
“I do hope so! I’m doing my best!”Ally said, taking no offense.
“Did you have a good night at your work party thingy?” the girl asked.
Her mother remained silent for a time, trying to come up with an accurate answer.
Maddie lifted her head to meet her eyes and exclaimed, suddenly less sleepy:
“Something happened last night!”
“Don’t be silly, it was just a boring office party,” Ally tried to dodge. “I kinda miss the ne we would have in Boston, though you’re not allowed to tell Richard or Elaine!”
“Then you met somebody!” Said Maddie, tenaciously.
Ally sighed a little, before blurting out:
“Larry was at the lame party.”
Maddie gaped, in shock.
“Oh my God, how was it? How was he? Are you gonna see him again? “
“Too many questions my love, I can’t answer them all at the same time!”
“Just give me something!”
“He looked handsome, he was perfect. We chatted for some time, and it was really nice. I think I may see him again at the office, at least I hope so…”
Maddie was sporting a bright smile on her face, and Ally couldn’t help but be amazed at her little girl, so happy for her to have been reunited briefly with the love of her life. Maddie had never met Larry, but she trusted her mother’s judgment completely.
They spent their Sunday lazily, talking about their previous nights, having brunch, just hanging around together. Mother/daughter bonding time was what she needed.
In the evening, as Maddie was getting ready to go to bed (which shouldn’t take long since she had never left her pjs), the doorbell rang.
Mother and daughter exchanged a glance, and Ally motioned for her daughter to go back to her ritual, while she went to answer it. She was quite surprised to see Larry on her doorstep.
“I … What… Larry?” She asked.
“Yep… I’m sorry, I didn’t realize it was so late…”, he said, almost blushing.
“It’s not that late, I just spent my day in my pjs… Come in!” She suddenly said when she realized that she hadn’t invited him to do so.
He came into her flat, and she suddenly felt very self-conscious about it. Things were lying around, and there were still boxed she hadn’t unpacked…
Larry took everything in but didn’t comment.
“I’m sorry I came so late to see you, but I spent my day looking for something, and when I did get it, I had to bring it over right away…”
“Who gave you my address?” Ally suddenly asked with a suspicious look on her face.
“You don’t want to know… Anyway, here it is,” he said, handing her picture.
She took it and her hand went straight to her mouth, as she found herself holding back something that was half a sob, and half a laugh.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!”H exclaimed when he saw this, taking her in his arms. “I didn’t want to make you cry!”
“Those are happy tears,” Ally murmured against his shoulder, holding the picture to her heart.
“Mom?” Maddie asked, coming in the room.
“Mom?” Larry asked, completely baffled as he let go of her.
“It’s okay honey,” Ally said, and for a moment she didn’t know whether she was addressing Larry or her daughter. “Larry just brought me this photograph of me and Renee acting silly and it was a great surprise.”
She handed the picture to her daughter who laughed as she got a little teary too, and said:
“I really miss Renee momma…”
“I know baby,” Ally said, taking her daughter in her arms. “Larry, meet my daughter, Maddie. Mads, this is Larry.”
“I heard a lot about you”, Maddie said.
“I really can’t say I have,” Larry said, still shocked. “But it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Yeah, you too… I’m going to bed,” she told her mother.
“Night, sweet dreams!”
“Bye Larry!” Maddie said.
“Thank you so much for the photograph, I was really sad I couldn’t find it in my stuff,” Ally said, when they were left alone.
“My pleasure. I thought it would cheer you up, in your time of need. Now, hope it won’t offend you, but you have a daughter?”
Ally smiled, bracing herself for what would be an enlightening conversation.
