"Into the purring night you call."

The contract's signed and sent, so I think it's safe to announce my poem Rainspeaking has been bought by Strange Horizons! It started out life as a short story which felt just a bit too flat to work. I like it a lot better in this incarnation and I'm pleased it found a good home. In other news, Other Voices got its fourth rejection last week. I've been trying to target bigger markets with this one. I'm not too cut up about this one - I had a personal rejection that short but encouraging. a novelette's a tough one to sell, and maybe this one's pacing works against it. I'm considering zoetropix's advice to put together the first few Furzes as a collection or episodic novel, maybe try to sell one-offs with Jon or Alice solo.

I start a placement at a local charity shop tomorrow morning. I guess you'd call this involuntary work - I've been put on the "Community Work Programme" by the jobcentre. They give me scratchcards to use on the buses, but I'm not being paid. I am ambivalent - on one hand, it's another hoop to jump through to keep benefits, on another it's at least something to put on the CV. We'll see.

Reading Mark Valentine's Seventeen Stories. So far there's been a Holmes story, a rather charming take on The Beast With Five Fingers, and an incomplete apocalypse waiting for its reader. If the collection has any warning, then it's all very well to love arcane texts, but don't forget the world beyond your bookshelves. Antiquaries beware! A great book so far.
