Connect THIS

OK, nevermind what I said before; this simply cannot wait. And you know I almost never post twice in one day, because it's annoying. But so is ConnectU.

ConnectU is the hideous lovechild of Friendster and Facebook, but scarier and way more pathetic. At first I thought it was cool, and I admit that I even invited a bunch of people to it (sorry, guys!). Here is why ConnectU is the devil:

1) The Chat feature. It scares me that people can IM me from the site, and there is no screening process for this (the way you can block people on AIM).

2) Stalkers and people with no life. As a result of #1, I've lost count of how many random, bored, often extremely horny guys have IMd me in the last few days. Some of them really are nice...but that's not the point. The point is that they IMd me based solely on my picture (the same damn one that I have on LJ). I know it's a nice picture; that doesn't mean I want to sleep with someone on the Internet.

3) The Most Popular Profile crap. The Most Popular Profiles feature encourages competition among the masses as to who can post the most provocative picture, thus earning more profile hits. Think I'm kidding? Look at the Top 40 list and then try to tell me I'm wrong. This one girl who has a fuzzy pic of herself in her underwear is consistently at the top. It's the people mentioned in #2 who are looking at it over and over again. Doesn't she feel gross that random guys with nothing better to do are looking at her body over the Internet and probably jacking off to it (because they really don't have anything better to do)? I've been on that list for a few days (though not at the top, thankfully), and I feel violated. But that's only because I have some humility.

4) The blog feature. It's not linked to each person's individual pre-existing blog. You actually have to post on that site for it to show up. The only reason people use that feature is the fact that "Most Recent Blog Entry" is on the main screen, which makes everyone want to "share" their thoughts so that people will click on their profile and they will get more hits. WHO CARES HOW MANY HITS YOU HAVE ON YOUR FUCKING PROFILE?!?!?!

In conclusion, I will repeat that I am boycotting this site. It encourages the mindless and superficial qualities that often make me detest people at this school. And other schools are exactly the same, apparently. People are more concerned with how popular they are on the Internet (read: in a world that does not exist), then with preparing themselves for the real world, which, I'm sorry to say, is in a sorry state right now. Seriously, I'm not trying to sound all sanctimonious or act like I don't enjoy or spend time on sites like this. But taking it so seriously, and being all competitive about it just makes you sad.
