Gibbs was a man of few worldly possessions. He had his Sig, his badge and his cell phone. But those he needed for his job. The only other thing he kept with him, the only other thing he brought with him to Mexico besides some clothes, was his Zippo lighter.
He couldn’t remember when he first got it. It seemed that he had always owned it. And to him, it was more meaningful than a whole album of photographs. And more compact.
All he had to do was to flick it open and thumb the wheel. That distinctive smell of lighter fluid could remind him of so many things:
-- lighting the driftwood fire on the beach after riding horses with Kelly and Shannon;
--lighting his wounded buddy’s cigarette;
--burning evidence in the hotel room in Paris;
--using the lighter to check the map crossing the English Channel in the sailboat.
Oh, he needed no pictures, no souvenirs.
He had his Zippo.
