It was late when Ducky slowly climbed the stairs to his attic. He switched on the light and made his way to the far corner. There he found a RAMC footlocker. He knelt down slowly and opened the lock. He pushed open the lid and searched carefully through the contents.

There at the very bottom, he found a smaller box, also locked. He took it and sat down in a nearby chair. He fitted a small key into the lock and turned it.

Inside was a diary. His diary of the time in Afghanistan. He had hoped to fill the pages with stories of how he, the young idealistic doctor had made a difference in people’s lives.

Oh, how wrong it had all gone.

He had ignored the diary for over 30 years. He had in effect blotted that time from his mind. But after the accusations and the stabbing, the forgotten past had returned in full force.

Jethro, dear Jethro, had moved heaven and earth to exonerate him. At what cost to the gray haired agent was still to be determined.

Ducky knew that Gibbs had saved his, the doctor’s mortal body, but in doing so damned his very soul.

The ME slowly opened the journal. As he began to read, he knew he had returned to the long dark midnight of his heart.
