VBS was this past week. We had between 150 & 173 kids each night, and I don't know how many volunteers to wrangle all the kids. The girls had a BLAST and are already talking about next year. In SS yesterday their teacher asked all the kids to draw their favorite part of VBS and the girls had a horrible time deciding . . . "but I loved it all!" They loved the singing, thought the corn maze was great fun, and took turns finding the hole punches hidden throughout it. Enjoyed the crafts (though I had to keep (subtly) reminding the woman who was doing crafts for our group that these things are about fun not the finished product & if the girls want to draw squiggles on their bag instead of a house that's fine thankyouverymuch! I suggested to the VBS leader (who happens to be one of my close friend) that perhaps this particular volunteer would be better utilized somewhere OTHER than a craft table next year LOL.). Our youth pastor, the VBS leader's brother & a couple of teenagers were in charge of the Bible Room. I'm honestly not sure that the little kids understood the actual Bible story for all the silliness, but they LOVED it! And looked forward to "the brothers" (the 4 guys played the roles of 4 red-neck brothers, Larry, his twin brother Larry (said in a low voice) and his twin brother Larry (said in a high voice) and Arthur) who then acted out object lessons &/or the relevant Bible story each night. And yes, the girls did point out to me, the first night, that if Larry has TWO twin bothers, they would be triplets, not twins LOL) each night. Games were hit or miss, they enjoyed individual games, not so fond of the relay type games, though Lexie was at least willing to do it, Ashlyn chose not to both nights. A & N (VBS co-leaders) are planning to design their own program this next year rather than buying the "pre-packaged" program from Group, so I have a feeling we'll be involved in coming up with what games to play, I think getting to play them ahead of time, so they're recognized will help the girls alot) snacks are always a good thing & the last night the woman in charge of handing out the snacks added some twizzler bites to the mix of pretzels & crackers we'd had the rest of the week, much to the kids' delight (I had fun teasing the snack lady about being a typical grandmother & not worrying about the extra sugar = hyper kids factor LOL). And the Chadder Chipmunk videos were also much appreciated, and the girls were very excited to find out, as I sent them home w/ Daddy yesterday after church (& I stayed to help get ready for the parents program we had last night) that I'd borrowed the Chadder video from A and they could watch it here at home (though I never asked if they did LOL).
I was also amused to realize, when we walked into SS yesterday morning, that the girls had never realized that the Bible room was actually their SS classroom. We didn't do total tear-down until last night (after the parents program), so at SS time the black plastic w/ florescent paint were still on 3 of the 4 walls (during the week it was on all 4 walls (but we kind of wanted access to the sink & supply cupboards during SS, so they did tear that wall down on Fri night) & the room was lit w/ blacklights) we walked into SS and the girls said "this is the room where we saw the brothers for VBS!!!!" I had thought they'd realized that out during the week, since they know the layout of the church pretty well, but I guess we came at it from a somewhat different direction than we do when we come to church.
