49 - The English Patient
August 25th, DVD

I'm a big fan of epic-romantic-dramas so it was a shame that I had never seen that one. Now that I've seen it, I think it's even more a shame. I LOVED IT. I squee-ed, I cried, everything.

I thought it was quite a classic movie in its genre. I don't mean cliché, though. I liked the way the story wa stold, and the transitions between the flashbacks and the present moment. I liked how the main character (and everyone) slowly built, you learn bit by bit of his history, and how the relationships between the characters at the monastery slowly changes. I loved the romance (duh), I cared about most of the characters, and it made me cry. And the desert settings are always a good point because it's so gorgeous.

And now, for the less constructed part of the review.

Ralph Fiennes... I've never been a fangirl over him. I loved him in The Constant Gardener, and I actually like his Voldemort self, but not in a fangirl way. I've never seen any likelyness between him and his super hot brother Joseph either. Well, now I see both. How I loved Almàsy ! I can't help it, I love the morally doubtful, brooding but totally in love with the girl type... I blame Rhett Butler.

I also loved Kristin Scott Thomas, which is not a surprise, because I always like her. Juliette Binoche, on the contraru, was annoying.. At the beginning, she's whinning that all those she loves dies, and she must be cursed. YOUR COUNTRY IS AT WAR, DUMBASS ! I forgive her a little because she got Not-Sayid naked, though.

Not-Sayid... I admit he was the tipping point that made me finally see that movie. Well, Not-Sayid is not as hot as Sayid. He's very sexy but... he's lacking Sayid's brains. I understand better my best friend love for Spike-only. But hey, I'm really not complaining about him, especially not when he's washing his hair !

50 - Almost Famous
August 25th, DVD

There's something really compelling about that movie, but it's also quite flawed. It's a coming to age story, and it goes in every direction at the same time but it's working with the era and evenements depicted. I kinda felt like I was in a room where everyone but you is high and yet, you don't really care. I felt like the character was taking me on the same trip he was. It's more about the general mood than anything else, because you have already seen movies with the same idea, this kind of plot, but it feels right, so it's not very important.

It's well acted, especially from Kate Hudson who is brilliant as Penny Lane, and Philip Seymour Hoffman who is like in 5 scenes and yet is memorable. As he always is. The characters are all flawed, and mostly lost, and all touching.

Obviously, my favorite part about this movie was the soundtrack. Led Zeppelin *o* And Alvin and the Chipmunks !

Because I'm in a good mood and I only have 5 stars.

So... 50/100 ! It's not looking very well for me but I kinda hope to get high on movies in September. Let's see if I can still make it !
