The Princess Diairies (Princess Malgré Elle)
July 9th, DVD
I love the Princess Diaries books. They're pink and shiny in the French edition, and that's alone is a reason to read them. But they're cute, Mia is adorable although she always ends up in the most impossible situations only because of herself. But I love them.
This ? was not a good movie, and not a good adaptation of the books. Of course, it's kinda cute, and I liked Anne Hathaway in it, but it lost all the awesomeness of the books. The only thing as great than in the books is Michael, but really, how can you not love Michael ? And I liked Jo too, but Lars is already my favorite character in the books.
But although Julie Andrews looks awesome and very classy, she's not scary as book!Clarisse is. She's always nice to Mia, therefore Mia looks like a spoilt child who doesn't want to be a princess just because. And since she just doesn't want to be it, you can't really relate to her, and you're not that into the movie (although I realize even the books are intended for teenage girls).
I'm appaled that they killed Mia's father only because it's easier to have him DEAD than getting a testicular cancer ! Seriously ! I love the testicular cancer thing in the books : "oh well, I was going to have other kids so that you don't have to be a princess, but now I can't".
Just so you know, yes, I got all teary during Mia's speech at the end. But I get all teary reading every single book, and it's quite ridiculous, actually. Here, it annoyed me because the movie isn't good.
