38 - Persepolis
July 3rd, theaters

I really loved this movie. It was great, especially because I had not read much about it and haven't heard the buzz so it looked nice but WOW, great surprise.

The graphism is amazing. I loved the black and white, and the greys in the backgrounds, and it looks both really simple (the character designs) and very rich (the backgrounds). Above the graphism, I loved the way it is used to tell the story, the graphical answers to cut from a scene to another, to fade to black... It's very inventive and visually amazing.

At first, I felt the story was too historical. Too many events, and not enough personal emotion. Which, I know, is strange to say considering the tragic events told. And, although it is the best reference ever, the "politic story through the eyes of a little girl" felt too much like Mafalda. But then, the story grows to show both the story of Marjane and the story of Iran and I really enjoyed it. I laughed, and cried, and loved it. I was angry at it, and at the world, for the character, and every emotion this story should give you.

I actually don't have much more to say about this movie, excepted that you should all pack tissues and go and see it. It's a great movie, and it's me, saying this about a (kinda) french movie.
