I just found out that one of the more important people in my life's timeline passed away on September 18th. Back in 1999, I had searched everywhere locally for someplace to base my new online retail store, but vacant commercial rentals in this area were very hard to find, and none that were available were what you would call 'affordable'.
I forget now exactly who it was that referred me to Floyd Squires, but it was a godsend. He evidently liked me and my business pitch from the get-go, because he took it upon himself to completely rehabilitate and remodel a large space in his own building downtown to be my office and warehouse, without me having to contribute even a dime to the multiple-thousand-dollar cost. And when it was done, he rented that 1200 sq ft space to me for only $300 per month. Without that base of operations and its low overhead, there was no way my business could ever have gotten off the ground, let alone flourish.
The next 5 years would be the most fulfilling of my life, and it was that business that actually made it possible for me to buy the house I now live in. In the end, market forces - in particular Amazon.com - forced me to shutter its doors, but it was Floyd Squires who made my business and home ownership dreams come true, and for that I will always be grateful.
Thank you, Floyd, and may you rest in peace.
