Thankful

Nov 25, 2021 09:19

This is the 36th time now that I have foregone any formal celebration of Thanksgiving. It's not simply that this is a family holiday and I have no family left, but because my father died on Thanksgiving in the most tragic of circumstances, and that's not the sort of event that any person respectful of their past would feel is appropriate to celebrate with a feast. (This should be a day of fasting for me, if anything.)

But I do give thanks on this day for one thing: that of all the couples in the world who could have adopted me - a baby cast aside and abandoned at birth - Ed and Lillian Shannon were the parents I ended up with. It's only because of them that I had the chance to live the amazing life I did. I owe literally everything to these two extraordinary human beings, and for that, I am truly thankful, every single day.

To those who are celebrating a traditional Thanksgiving today, I wish you Bon Appétit! And, as I always remind people: don't forget to thank the turkey, too! 🦃
