No one would accuse Yuu Kanda of being an overly vocal man -- unless he was yelling at someone -- but even his taciturn tendencies surprised him as he leaned against the wall of Komui's office, removed from the exhausted, bandage-ridden trio sitting on the couch. Borrowing the histrionic German woman's Innocence just a bit longer, the stupid rabbit and Lenalee told them about the trip to Japan from China; Kanda watched the color drain out of Komui's face little by little as his precious little sister related her battle with the Level Three.
The rabbit described the way her Innocence had protected her; and if he hadn't seen it for himself in Edo, Kanda would never have believed him.
As the recounting moved into the suicidal attack on the Earl, into details Kanda was familiar with, he tuned their voices out. He glanced at Lenalee, bookended by the other two, and felt his lip curl.
She was a mistake.
Her existence was a mistake. Vicious thoughts sped through his mind, uncharitable and angry and more upset than he could remember being in a long time.
She should be dead. She should be laying on the bottom of the ocean, feeding fish of all sizes. She wouldn't have even had a black-draped coffin in the Order's chapel.
She should be dead.
She wasn't.
Miracles were things Kanda couldn't understand.
... beautiful mistakes were things he couldn't understand.
Title is paraphrased from Macbeth, Vv: "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
