Allen would begrudge the new Order Headquarters one thing: the courtyard gardens were beautiful.

He stood in the cool of an afternoon on the cusp of autumn and winter, grey eyes staring up at a sky of the same color. All around him, the garden clung to life; the yellow and orange chrysanthemums had begun to lose their hue at their petal tips, but they still refused to let their stems bend their faces toward the ground. The small trees in their perfect rows still retained some green underneath countless boughs of red-brown leaves.

The grass had, sadly, lost its battle with the change of seasons and crunched underfoot. Allen heard it yield to heavy bootsteps, making little rustling noises as his companion came closer. Allen didn't mind the company; though some folk at Headquarters were more welcome than others.

"Let me guess," came the voice, just over his shoulder. Allen smiled a little, but didn't look down just yet. "It looks like a blob."

"I was just thinking it looked like the underside of an umbrella, actually," he replied and glanced backward, head turned a little to the side to admire the shock of red hair against the sky. The green eye in contrast to the black eyepatch covering its twin. The perplexed smile in contrast to the worried or hostile glances burned into his memory.

"Come again?"

Allen straightened and turned to his side, smiling in return. "The clouds are keeping the rain from falling on us."

Lavi's expression took on that faint, patronizing tinge that always foretold a lecture. "Allen," he said with a little chuckle, placing one hand on his hip. "That's not how weather works, you know."

"Of course I know," Allen retorted and stuck out his tongue. He turned back around and looked back at the sky. "But still, it's nice to think, sometimes." He noted Lavi's silence; the redhead rarely spoke in existentialist terms, but sometimes Allen saw his friend as a paradoxical atheist; one who wielded proof of God's existence and yet refused to believe. The mental exercise it took to accomplish such a task must be exhausting.

He yelped and tried to duck as Lavi caught him up in a headlock and mussed his hair vigorously. Allen shoved and struggled to get out of the grip without having to resort to his Innocence. Lavi left his hair alone, but kept him in the headlock. "Yuu'd say you spend too much time with your head in the clouds."

Allen elbowed Lavi sharply in the kidney and the redhead let go, tumbling to the ground, complaining loudly about the pain. Allen ran his hands through his hair and made a harsh, dismissive sound. "The day Kan-dumb starts using language like that is the day Komui lets Lenalee start dating."

Lavi lay flat on the mostly dead grass and snorted. "Watch me not hold my breath."

"Exactly."

After a moment or two of companionable silence, Lavi sat up with a groan. "You play too rough, Allen." He rubbed his side and gave an exaggerated wince.

Allen glanced down and stepped over to stand beside him. He started to brush the dead grass out of Lavi's hair. But his smile had a rather incongruous edge to it; one that did not match the gentle grooming. "You don't usually complain," he murmured, and smiled a little wider as Lavi's eye widened a little. Allen let his fingers twine into the red hair; he tugged faintly and Lavi closed his eye and tilted his head back with the movement. "Perhaps I should be nicer?" He tightened his grip and Lavi groaned softly.

"Watch me... not hold my breath."

Thanks to kay_willow for coming up with "Kan-dumb". ♥ XD
