TV from the sickbed

Another bout of sickness, nearly over, and I've been alternating between exploring my HDDs and reading. I'm also fairly up to date on my current 'must watch' list.

Merlin and Supernatural have been slipping off the radar for a while, been finding the juvenile humour of Merlin requires me to be in the right mood for it. As for SPN, there's only so much torture the brothers can go before they overplay that option.

I'm surprisingly attracted to Vampire Diaries, which was one of last year's releases. A definite case of silk purses from sow's ears (seriously, the books were pretty average for their time, and by now are lost in the slew of similar teen vampire romances). I'm impressed by the writing, they've taken the plot skeleton from the trilogy, cast a bunch of pretty people, and thrown so many additional plot points in they should have brought it all crashing down like a castle made of cards. Yet somehow it works. There's a few gems among the actors, especially Ian Summerhalder. There's even a throwaway character who has since become one of the main players, and one of my favourite characters. How they made me like a neurotic blonde cheerleader

Nikita is my favourite of this season's offering. I never really got into the last series attempt (La Femme Nikita, with Peta Wilson), but casting Maggie Q for this version, which is pretty action movie-style, was an excellent choice. Also, a not-white, not-male title character is happy making. Although she is an action hero, and usually gets stuck with the cliche clothing on mission (ninja chique and fatale), I love that she wears a mixture of high fashion and comfortable clothing when wandering around her hideout or comforting others who were caught up in the mission of the week. It somehow makes her more of a character that she has a persistant style of her own. I also love the relationship between Nikita and Alex - I could totally slash them. Shane West (neo Darby Crash) is another actor I like, though I'm waiting for them to do something more with the character.

I've found the time to start watching Fringe - been meaning to do that for a while. I remember liking the pilot, but not wanting to add another show to the list at the time. It's reminding me quite strongly of the X-Files, with a little extra mad science in the mix. I don't think I'll be fanatical about it, though it's an enjoyable show to mainline.

I'm still watching Smallville, which has far more downs than ups, yet manages to keep my affection. I think it doesn't take itself too seriously, and the sledgehammer of symbolism that is constantly used keep the comic-esque vibe that I like in my comicbook adaptions. Ollie has completely taken over as the show's superstud, which works for me. (Poor Tom, his adult build is heavy enough that he would have to do insane levels of gymwork to maintain the bulk and his former levels of tone. Of course, if he did, he wouldn't need much padding for the old spandex costume).

I've watched the first couple of episodes of Tower Prep, but it's pretty dire - Trinity and Demons level of dire. If Christian Cooke couldn't save them, I don't think Drew Van Acker can save Tower Prep, even if he is a former underwear model. Ah, the crap I watch just for the pretty boys. :p

Ah well, back to work tomorrow, and by work I mean that it's actually a training day - risk assessment tools or something. My Team Leader will also be going (because she loves her training and takes as many courses as she can), which might be entertaining. I hope this weekend is quiet, reports-wise, because I won't get to do any assessments until Thursday afternoon at this rate. A week worth of backlog to play with, again. *sighs*
