After his meeting with Dean, Terry had gone off to the pet shop down the street from their parents’ flat. On his way there he had run into Luna Lovegood who had apparently been hunting for Nargles with a butterfly net until he arrived. She stopped, though, to help Terry pick something out for Padma. He still wasn’t exactly sure why a pet was warranted, but that was what he wanted to get her, so he had. And he had to admit, his final choice was absolutely adorable. Even he had given in to the cuteness of the fluff ball for a moment. He really hoped that Padma would like it, but after a few more glances into the small box he knew that she would.
When he arrived back at the flat he set down the bag that contained the cage and all the supplies, holding the box tightly in one hand as he dug around in his pocket for his keys. Finally the man let himself into the entranceway, nudging the bag through the door with his foot. Leaving it there on the floor he closed the main door and opened the next, allowing his to see into the flat. Padma was curled up on the couch with her books and translations. Terry gave a small smile as he saw her. She told him to wait and he did, leaning against the doorframe, holding the box with two hands now.
“Well, when you’re done I have a present for you,” he told her, raising his eyebrows mischievously even though she wasn’t looking at him. His blue eyes went down to the box and then looked back at her. If that didn’t make her hurry up he didn’t know what would.
Hearing that Terry had something for her only peaked the witch’s curiosity as she continued to write. Padma was not going to quicken her pace per say but she was intrigued by what he had. Her boyfriend had been gone for a while so this could be interesting. That and it would mark an amazing end of her epic essay. And as the quill scratched through the last word, a smile crossed the witch’s face brightly. She put the roll of parchment on the couch to dry and cleared the long section off. It had been a good week since she started that assignment and it was refreshing to finally be free from it. Nothing was worse that being stuck with Terry and a boyfriend and writing instead of being with him. Not to say that anyone else would have been different but Padma preferred the brunette to the other men she knew and maybe some she did not. He did silly things like argue so that she gets sleep and makes sure she is eating right. Little things.
Padma stood up finally, crossing the space, eyes narrowing at the little box in her boyfriend’s hands. Mixed with the look of pure mischief on Terry’s face made the witch curious. He was looking like in that box he held the soul of every Ravenclaw they knew. Maybe even a few Gryffindors- it was scary. Cute but scary that is- she wanted to know.
“I gift? What is it?” she asked, lips pulling inward as her large brown eyes looked up at him with a gleam of innocence. “And why…”
Terry watched Padma from his spot near the entrance, holding the box in both hands. She seemed even more determined to finish her report now that she had a new kind of motivation; no one could resist a mysterious box that was something he knew for a fact. He could tell that she was finishing up by the gleam in her eye. When she finally set down the quill he grinned at her, feeding off of her pleased energy. She stood and walked over to him eagerly, eyes narrowed at the box. He was hoping that she would at least figure out that there was something live in the box; it did have holes poked in the lid after all. The man was surprised that the chinchilla hadn’t made any sounds yet. He hadn’t heard so much as a squeak or a scratch since he and Luna had left the shop.
Padma asked for the reason why he was giving her a gift and he gave her a shrug.
“You deserve it,” he answered simply, still smiling at her. But now it softened into more of an adoring look rather than the mischief that had been carved across his face at first.
“Oh, Luna says hi, by the way,” he told her casually. “Ran into her while I was getting this.” He held the box out for her. As he did so, the thing inside let out a tiny, high-pitched squeak. Terry’s blue eyes watched Padma’s face curiously as she took the box from him, looking at it curiously.
Padma had, in fact, not noticed the holes in the box. She only knew that is was cardboard and rather large for something simple like a little gift. There was nothing unusual about that in some odd reason- it was Terry and for all she knew he was simply getting her something like a set of books. She would not mind that as long as they had nothing to do with Russia. She was done with that wasteland and everything that archetype had to offer. She tilted her head more as he responded. Hearing that she deserved it was nice to hear- someone appreciated her slaving over the ridiculous assignment. It was worse than the freezing air on the site.
Hearing that he ran into Luna, a small smile appeared on the witch’s face. She liked Luna. Granted the girl was extremely odd and that she was not exactly the best person to meet in Muggle London but it was alright. The blond always meant well and that was what mattered. At the pause something she did not expect happened and that was the box letting out a noise. Eyes jumping to the box, Padma walked forward a bit more before returning her gaze to Terry’s soft expression. It had become more curious as if she really should figure out what was going on in that box.
“Terry, why did the box just squeak?” she asked, sounding rather dumb for a Padma comment. She knew why the box made a noise, there was an animal inside and judging by the sound something furry and possibly a rodent. She always liked them so anything would be adorable and highly uncalled for. Terry did not need to be spending money on her, especially since they had such a small flat and were content with the way things were going.\
