EGM Rant

i stopped ordering Electronic Gaming Monthly several years ago because they changed the magazine, and more often than not their opinions just ticked me off. as a gift my brother subscribed me for two more years, and i was grateful for the fact that i would know what games were being released and whatnot. here and there articles would piss me off, but nothing major. this time though... when Jeremy Parish started bashing FFVII and saying he forgives everyone for liking it... i felt my chest tighten with rage.

Point 1: Yeah, Final Fantasy Seven's graphics aren't that great... versus what is possible nowadays. the thing is... it came out 9 years ago. that's like me comparing the original Star Wars to the new ones, saying the old ones suck because the graphics aren't up to par with today's. we all know that's a complete lie. when the game was released, the graphics made fanboys and girls squeal with glee. don't act like you weren't affected. i hate how people try to compare graphics that came out years ago with today's accomplishments, it's ridiculous.

Point 2: how was VII a step back in gameplay? you organized materia to the best of your ability, and if you were really hardcore you'd level all the highest stuff over and over so your entire party could have it. (along with aquiring the master materia.) i don't know if i'd call it a step forward, but it was definetly not a step back.

Point 3: as far as overrating... you seem to have forgotten the key element to a roleplaying game: THE STORYLINE. Mr. Parish made no mention of storylines in his ovverrated Final Fantasy answer; just talked about graphics and being a step backwards. never has there been a game that sucked me in so much because of the depth of the characters and the story. Roleplaying = assuming a role in a stroy.

Point 4: Whereas Advent Children is concerned... this one goes out to both Mr. Parish and Mr. Bettenhausen. yeah... the FFVII storyline was so self contained that the ending left fans screaming for more because they wanted to know what happened. Square could have tied things up completely in writing(i.e. On the Way to a Smile) but they wanted to do more than that for us.

it's funny how it was mentioned that the sequels chip away good will for the original game... because, after all, it was the original game's fault that Dirge of Cerberus sucked. =/

please understand that i grew up with Final Fantasy. i used to sit for hours and watch my brothers play through them, so i'm not just a random idiot screaming 'z0MG u guys sUxx0rz sayign tat FF7 iznt teh kewlst!!1!11 ill pwn j00!!111!!!' yes, FFVII was the first Final Fantasy i played through on my own, but i was in the deep end of the series pool rather than just getting my feet wet by that time, thanks to my brothers. don't say you forgive me when i've done absolutely nothign wrong; that's the same as telling me i've done something wrong.

all that said, i can now say what's been burning in the back of my mind:
stick it. =D
