As the subject implies, I saw Watchmen last night/this morning - go go midnight showing! I'm almost regretting it today, as I got less than five hours of sleep and had a midterm at 8:45, but... I can't. XD
What can I say about this? I've never read the comics and all I knew going into it was that JDM was playing some guy named the Comedian and he was smokin' hot. This turned out to be very, very, very true. 8D
I loved the cinematics. They used a technique, particularly noticeable in the opening credits and scene, where it really felt like a comic book. I'm not sure how else to describe it - emphasizing the high points of motion, sudden slowdowns, brutal fight scenes with lots of loud "pow bang oomph"s going on. I liked it.
Rorschach is badass. And tragic. His badass was so clearly on display throughout the movie, but I just about died when he was in the prison and said (roughly paraphrasing) "I'm not locked in this prison with all of you. You are all locked in here with ME." Cue massive beatdown.
Speaking of beatdowns - the violence in this movie was... interesting! They definitely didn't skimp on the gorey detail shots. XD And yet I loved every second of it.
I feel so juvenile (yay I BE FIVE), but every time Dr. Manhattan was on screen and the c amera panned out just so, all I could think was "PENISPENISPENIS" It just sat there and was floppy and my eyes would be riveted to it the entire scene. >.< I am sorry, Alan Moore. I swear it wasn't sexual - it's just... you present an audience with a blatant appearance of penis? It's kind of hard not to look.
Speaking of Dr. Manhattan - um, dude, that guy wins the Awesome Award. He's a fascinating character, really. I love how he was slowly losing touch with humanity, how he seemed to live in this messed-up-as-fuck world where present and future were kind of one and the same, and his philosophy on life was actually one that I related to most (not sure what that says about me >.>). But, he really gets the Awesome Award because 1) He's glowing blue. 2) He walks around naked and is indestructable. 3) He can grow to ginormous proportions. 4) He was on freakin' MARS. and finally 5) "I think I'll create life"?? Can't really get more awesome than that. XD Yay Dr. Manhattan! You really are a doll for sacrificing your life on earth so us measly humans can live in relative peace.
What else, what else... oh, Laurie is sexy beyond belief. I don't think anyone can argue there. And speaking of sexy - can someone say SEX SCENE WOAH. I lol'd like a mofo when she orgasmedlit up the ship's blowtorch. XD Also, much <3 to her flowy hair; I am jealous.
Dan/Nite-Owl is adorable and I want to pinch his cheeks. That is all. Also, I kind of wonder if there's a slash fandom for Night Owl and Rorschach. Cause that scene out in the snow with Dr. Manhattan? D: TEARS
I am a cat lover. As such, I felt an embarrassing tug on my heart when Ozymandias aka Dickhead Adrian killed his pretty purple Egypt kitty. D: And for what, huh? NOTHING!! HE LOOKED SO SOFT AND CUDDLY!
Finally, I am laughing my ass off at the ZOMG HARDCORE FANS who seem to like nothing better to do than nitpick this movie. I think the top complaint has been that they didn't include a giant alien squid that apparently arrives at earth in the comic book; it is the squid which ultimately leads to peace on earth (the nations uniting agains the alien, rather than against Dr. Manhattan). Okay, that sounds cool, but... I really don't think random squid would fly in a movie theatre. >.< Also, I keep seeing people commenting on how they are SO SURE that the movie is going to turn people away from the comics cause it was so unforgiving or whatever... well, YOU ARE ALL WRONG! I totally want to find it now and read the shit out of Watchmen.
All in all, this was a fantastic movie. I'm glad I went into it without any preconceptions and really no idea as to the plot, either. According to Ryan, it was a good adaptaion. According to me, it is an excellent film for film's sake, too. GO SEE IT NOW! :D
