Lenya's First Critique

May 20, 2006 18:40

Had my critique on Thursday.

Ohhh dear.

First off, I waited too long to
sign up
Therefore, I signed up for a
Design Critique
and not a Foundation one.
Meaning
Surrounded by upperclassmen. Nervous?

You have no idea.

Night before I tried to get a project for my graphic design class Done.
Holy shit.
Took Forever.

I want my own computer.

After taking a ridiculous amount of TIME on my project,
Finally went to Kinkos at 2am with
Three great friends.
Kinkos dude, not my friend.
Complete douche.
I was so emotional I was on the verge of crying. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of seeing me
Cry
So I stormed out after a heated exchange of dialogue because Kinko's Macs are
All types of Shit.

Update!

I want my own computer.

Wednesday night panic attack.
What if I'm no good? What if my work is
Ordinary.
One hour of sleep. Headache. Forgetting things.
Kinkos man at BU
Also a douche
Showed up late, so I got my book bound for free.
Damn straight.

Realized a kid from my Language of Form class was also in my critique.
Familiarity, excellent.
He's 32. Wow. Intense age difference there.

I sat down.
We began.

I was a complete nervous wreck most of the 4 hours we had our critique. I can't explain how hard it was not to run away. I mean, being in a class with all upperclassmen and 4 staff panelists who were really bold and intense...

...running on like no sleep... starving...

...made the beginning really hard for me. But I pushed my feelings of wanting to hide away. I drank some water, sat up, and took notes. I leaned in and really listened to what was being said. I'm really happy that I went to an upperclassmen critique, because I was able to look at the artwork that I'll be doing (hopefully) soon and hear about what made the art strong and what needed to be worked on.

Then came my critique.

I was so nervous. I really cannot emphasize that: I was SO FUCKING NERVOUS. The students and faculty came in and I started to do my little "Hi my name is Lenya, I'm 20 and a freshman..." but after a few sentences I decided to shut up... because they were totally involved in looking at my art!

It was really weird seeing them walk around and look at everything I worked so hard on this past year. Everyone seemed really impressed the work came from a freshman who had also never used Adobe Photoshop OR Illustrator before. I was told that my drawings were great and that I should really hold onto my skill and not slip into the stereotype that graphic designers can't draw. The teachers were really supportive and gave me great advice. I also got some wonderful feedback on some slips of paper from my peers at the end. All I could think of was Sally Fields' speech "You like me, you really like me!" I wanted to cry, I was so happy.

I still am.
