The lost plateau - The lost brother - Author's notes

This isn't the end of Dean and Sam's adventures on the lost plateau ! There will be at least two sequels to the fic I'm sharing today ; one is more than half-written, the second is a lot less advanced but I know where I'm going and many scenes are already blocked. More beloved SPN characters will show up ! I even have ideas for a few (wincest-less) timestamps, including one that would be a crossover (with the H50 fandom, McDanno fan here !), so not all of you would be interested.

This fic was a long time coming. Back in 2011, I wrote an anonymous prompt for the spnkink_meme asking for a J2 fusion with The Lost World. No one was inspired but me ;) I kept thinking about it now and then over the years, but when I began to write a few sentences, Jensen and Jared became Dean and Sam, Katie Cassidy morphed into Nicki Aycox who turned into the original Meg Masters (my favorite by far), Jim Beaver became Bobby Singer, JDM's John Winchester handed his place over to Samuel Campbell, and Danneel… remained Danneel for a while.

But I didn't like that hers was the only real actress name while all the others were characters from SPN and I didn't want anyone else for the part so, as I am so very bad at imagining names for my original characters, I took a look at Danneel's resume at the IMDB. I first chose Jessica Shore, the name of a character she played on NCIS, because I saw the episode again while I was working on the fic and she was a pretty firecracker in that one (and also because I love that DiNozzo goes down in flame when he tries to flirt with Jessica). But then I thought people might confuse her with Sam's girlfriend Jessica Moore so in the end I mixed it with Jenn Harris, Danneel's character from Retired at 35 (that I've never seen).

Let's establish clearly that I'm no scientist and so every subject I touch in the fic and its upcoming sequels is the result of my internet readings and research. As such, it's probably full of mistakes and/or holes. Hopefully, you'll be able to suspend your disbelief and remember that at the time the story happens, science was a lot less advanced, and thus blame the characters instead of the writer :)

I heard about the "witch claw" plant on the radio back at the time I was just beginning to write my bigbang and I thought it would make for a nice detail to add to some SPN story someday. In the end, the injury Sam sustained on the plateau was a good opportunity to use it. The different French names of this species are real, and I share Professor Singer's puzzlement as to their origin. Anyway, don't go using carpobrotus without professional advice, as it might not be innocuous to everyone.

For those who haven't seen the show that inspired this fic, and/or who haven't read the book - shame on me ! - and don't know how much they overlap, here's a short summary of the story and who the characters are supposed to be (and who they are replaced by in the fic), as well as why they're around. You can totally skip it if you prefer the fic to remain "original".

Professor Messenger (Samuel Campbell) announces at a conference at the Royal Zoological Society that he has proof of the existence of a lost world where ancient beasts like dinosaurs still live and he knows its location. Many of his colleagues criticize his findings, including distinguished professor Summerlee (Bobby Singer). Messenger proposes to go on an expedition to prove his theory and they're joined by Lord John Roxton (Dean Winchester), a famous adventurer and hunter, Ned Malone (Sam Wesson), a young journalist, and by Marguerite Krux (Jenn Shore Mills), who finances the expedition for mysterious reasons.

Though Messenger is able to prove he was right, they get stranded in the very hostile lost world, a high plateau they only managed to access thanks to a hot-air balloon that was destroyed during their ascension. With no way to go back home, they meet Veronica (Meg Masters), a young woman who has lived here alone for many years since her parents disappeared. Wearing the skimpiest outfit, she saves Malone's life and then takes the merry band of explorers back to her home up a tree, helping them in the following months to get a feel for the land and deal with the many hidden dangers of the jungle, including scary dinosaurs and mean tribes.
