It's been a very long time since I've had theatre news! Exciting theatre happenings are exciting!
I've been "working with" a smallscale local community theatre company for about 12 years, off and on. I use the quotation marks, because I think the last show I actually WORKED on was about 2003. Anyway, the group hasn't really done much in the last few years. We've always been very dependent on the Fringe to kick our butts into doing something, but since the festival has moved to a pure lottery system, there have been too many years lately when we haven't actually gotten in. It's very easy to lose energy for doing theatre when you don't have a stage!
There was some very brief talk of folding as a society, since there didn't seem to be a lot of energy within the group, but it was realized very quickly that our problem was the fact that we HADN'T been doing anything for a few years. So, we're going to stop relying on the Fringe and make ourselves some performance opportunities!
Towards that end, I'm going to revive the Valentine's Day musical review, which was the show that actually brought me into the company in the first place. When our founder moved out of the city, I became "in charge" of future musical reviews, and when our accompanist pulled out two weeks before performance several years ago, I became discouraged and haven't done one since. That was in 2000.
Now, it's way in advance, but I have the two most important positions filled already. The Maestro will be our music director and accompanist, and The Ninja is going to be our affable narrator. After all, you can't do a musical review without an affable narrator. 8^)
