I really hadn't paid much attention to it before, Im guilty of that, but a few days ago i finally became aware of the fact that my 5 year old sister does not completely yet know how to read, but can, in fact, recite all of the jingles and advertisements from television by heart.
Its repulsive, and I wish we didnt have a t.v anymore.

While Beethoven was learning to play piano, a vast majority of European children weren't being educated at all because they weren't rich or of noble background. Nobody was taught about science or anything that occured outside of Europe. Women were rarely taught anything besides elementary and domestic education. Digression to old world education standards would be doing just that--digression. While I agree that TV works mostly to marginalize, homogenize, and disorganize people, I don't think standards of education were any better before it.

Probably nothing to worry about. mrjasen March 29 2004, 21:07:00 UTC
Even I don't recall starting to read until I was six, and look how obnoxiously smart I am. You should still probably try to nurture her though, and encourage her to read in any way possible. There's still plenty of time, but you don't have to take an English class at DASH to notice that alot of kids these days are not reading at the levels they should be.

I dont know if I agree, I think its plenty to worry about. Maybe I am going a tad over board, but my expectations for my sister-both creatively and academically-have always been rather high. I desperately dont want her to be classified as one of 'those children' who struggle with reading. Because aside the fact that Daniella might miss out on fantastic literature growing up, I would never want her to feel inadequate at any time in her life, either.

its funny how half the shows on tv and movies that are out are also books, but reading is what expands ur vocab and ur mind, rather than watching
