Technically I should have posted this installment yesterday, but in a classic "me" move, I forgot. So here you have it now, with three minutes left until it's two days late. Yay!
11. Who is your favorite character to write? Least favorite?
Ooh, tough one. I'd say my absolute favorite character is Krys, because she's so adorable and carefree and badass. (She actually reminds me a lot of Runaways Karolina, which is WEIRD, because I definitely wrote Krys before meeting Karo.) She brings out the best in all the rest of the characters. My least favorite is probably, well, any character that I just throw in because I need somebody there. A shop owner, or a random government agent. I always feel like these characters are so flat, and they're hard to get out because I'm afraid that I'm being a bad writer if I don't flesh them out a little in my mind. I much prefer dealing with my major characters.
12. In what story did you feel you did the best job of worldbuilding? Any side-notes on it you'd like to share?
Welll I'm not so good at worldbuilding. I try, because I love stories in alternate worlds, but it's really difficult. ...Once, I built a whole society based on convulted gender roles, and that was fun, but I never got around to writing in it. Maybe I should. Anyways, I think that when it comes to building a whole new world, I end up making it much like our world for simplicity's sake. Perhaps it's better that way, though...just change a few things around, keep the rest ordinary. I don't know. This question is hard.
13. What's your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?
I guess I would have to describe it as rebel cultures in heavily regulated societies. My current steampunk idea fits very well into this - a band of pirates being awesome in a posh British world. It's also dishearteningly similar to my last NaNo world - a band of drug dealers being awesome despite being pursued by an evil America-out-of-control government. But hopefully this world will be...much better thought out. Ugh. Still, yeah, I've become sort of addicted to writing about the counter-culture underdogs. They always have so much fun.
14. How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?
I'm not really sure what this question means. I tend to...not map, usually. I'm not very good at it. You can all use your imagination, yes?
15. Midway question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!
The professional writer I respect the most is Neil Gaiman. In fact, I sort of wish I *was* Neil Gaiman. He's the most talented storyteller in the world, and I worship at his altar. Also he's adorable and British and I love him. <3
Of course, there's also Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett, who are a thousand different kinds of fabulous. They have yet to write a character I didn't like, or a story I didn't find interesting, and they do it all with such wit and class. (And to be fair, I will include dorkorific in this, because though she may only be a Shoebox collaborator and not technically professional, she's still incredible and talented.)
Non-professional...let's see.
sweetjerry is completely amazing, and what she's done with Iphael is brilliant. She grasps characters so perfectly, I would trust her with my own.
pargoletta is my favorite Mercutio/Benvolio writer. Her Caro-verse is incredibly detailed and well researched, and her characterization is spot-on, and the way she weaves modern and Shakespearean language is beautiful. As for my friends,
lyricalecho is a much better writer than she thinks...I would read anything she's written, because what she does with the characters is just so much fun. Even the horribly depressing meanfic stuff. XD
