Oct 6, 2010 (late entry)
So we spent the night in the wonderful Mission Inn in Carmel, California. Next morning, we got up, visited the ocean for a little while...
...tooled around town a little bit...
...looked for Clint Eastwood, didn't find him, and then hit the Pacific Coast Highway.
We stopped for a wonderful lunch in Half Moon Bay, which is just about as picturesque as its name, then on to San Francisco.
We got there in the mid to late afternoon, found our motel in Cow Hollow and then went out to look around and have dinner. Of course since our hotel was on Lombard Street, one of the first things we did was go to the squiggly part and drive down.
I think we did it about 4 times while we were there. There were always people around taking pictures so I wonder how many pictures we were in, going home with people.
We of course had to drive across the bridge, but to be honest, the first time we did it was an accident. We got on the expressway and didn't mean to, so we ended up crossing over. It's free to go over to Sausalito, but costs $6 to come back. Still, it was worth it. We went over several more times before we were done. The first evening was mostly driving around, and me getting used to driving in San Francisco.
The streets are steep, there are stop signs at every block, pedestrians, dog walkers, and cyclists EVERYWHERE. Then down around the waterfront you have to contend with the Segway tours and the little yellow go-car tours that weren't much bigger than bumper cars. Lucky we didn't kill somebody.
We went to Coit Tower, which I think you have to do if you're a tourist. Magnificent views of the city and the bay. Luckily they have an elevator, but it's still a trek to get to the very top. The view is worth it.
That's Alcatraz taken from the top of Coit Tower.
Yes, it looks like a woman, but it's really Christopher Columbus.
Does this look like a postcard or what?
Nighttime on the Sausalito side of the bridge.
Day 5 was packed. No one died. It was a good day.
