Tell your friend that 30 years ago the good people of MA didn't want the public schools de-segregated either. Did the state put that to a vote? No. And even though a lot of violence ensued when they started busing, eventually people realized that the world wouldn't end if black people and white people went to school together. Had the state still voted on it would schools still be segregated? Would that be right?
I know a lot of people get mad when gay rights gets compared to civil rights but gay rights IS a civil rights issule plain and simple. When you deny another human a right to live an equallife, you are denying them their civil rights, and we don't need a popular vote to tell us that, do we?

On the relevent hand, I always thought that's why we had courts and votes and representatives. Argh.
