On our way out on our bikes yesterday, a little before 1pm, we were distracted for a good ten minutes by the absolutely wonderful sight of a
red kite soaring on the thermals above the fields.
It's very difficult to judge the size of something that's in the air at an uncertain distance, but on a few occasions it swept low and near, and I'm reasonably sure it's a full-sized adult of around 2m wing span. The split tail of the red kite was definitely visible.
A beautiful and deeply satisfying thing to see. I'm hoping to catch more glimpses of it in the future - if it remains around here, we should get some good views of it from the back of the house (I'd thought I'd seen it briefly a few days previously).
