Alright, so I've taken a few trips outside of London so far: Cardiff, Wales, Dublin, Ireland and my current trip to Venice, Italy, Barcelona, Spain and Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Cardiff sucked. 'Nuff said. Well, ok, I'll go into a little more detail: Cadiff sucked a big, floppy donkey dick? Wales is cool because it's antiquated, enchanting, uncorrupted. These are all things that Cardiff is not. Cardiff is a stupid little city that has no redeeming characteristics. It's ugly, grungy, overrun by commercialism and the people smell. So we {G, Jon, Jon's friend Gaurav and I} were there for one thankless weekend. One day we took a train outside the city and saw a cool old castle with everything cool castles should have: a moat, towers, the works. Decent. It rained the whole day though and we didn't get to get as far away from the city as we wanted to so we got drunk in some town {G and I on Frosty Jack, the nastiest cider you've ever consumed}, missed our train, got more drunk, G puked in the corner of some pub, caught a train, passed out, had some guy piss in our Strongbow litre, got back to Cardiff, left the litre of Strongbow on the train and went to this comedy show. The second guy was Canadian and very funny, I couldn't stop laughing, but the others were lame. We went home the next day on a bus with seats that felt like VC POW cell. Boo for Cardiff.
Dublin was nicer. G, Jill, Julia and I went there to celebrate Halloween. Dublin was not to dissimilar from Cardiff in terms of appearance except bigger and the architecture was nicer {a good deal of gothic influence}. Went to the Guinness factory, lame but some free Guinness and that's about it. The Irish were generally a very friendly people though and I got a nice vibe from the city. We went out a couple of the nights and had a pretty good time. Halloween was anticlimactic {we thought there was some huge festival . . . wraaaaannnnggg} as Jill and Julia chose to pay a lot of money to go to some club and G and I just went to a bar. The last day there G and I left the city and took a pretty awesome hike/walk up to and along the cliffs overlooking the water. Sick views. Some horses. Some ratty-ass, militant cows. Good stuff. That's about it for Ireland but I'm going back in a week and a half {Cork} which should be a lot better because I'll be on my own. G also hooked up with Julia again which hastened the semi-collapse of our circle of friends here. Also, this is about the time that Jill suspiciously, and probably uncoincidentally, started disliking me (and others?) and chose to distance herself.
Last weekend was the beginning of reading week and G, Jon, Steve and I left for Venice on saturday. I'll a special entry for this particular trip but in short, Venice was perfect. Everything you could hope for by watching the videos and seeing the pictures and more. Beautiful, antiquated, almost completely untouched. It's straight out of the mind of a poet. And Barcelona's a lot of fun. There's a lot to see, nice weather, good-looking Spanish people, Falafal. Just a real nice vibe. I'll give this trip it's due attention when I get back to school.
