So, started watching the first two episodes of Generator Rex to see what's what. First of all, this seems to be geared towards an older audience, older teens at least. Also, recently found out it was based off an Image comic, so I might do some digging on that. First of all, watching it received a dose of
Hey, it's that Voice! since there are a lot of seasoned voice actors. I wonder if there are cartoons where Terra Strong is not in, not that I mind her but wow, how does she keep up with it all!
Basic premise is that something happens, no one knows what exactly, and caused nanites to get spread EVERYWHERE. Sometimes they just do nothing, other times they can turn things into monsters with no control over themselves. Things altered by the nanites are called Evos. Story follows a government group who's job is to quell the Evo issue and protect people. First episode was good, had a few of the aspects that are a bit common in 'kids cartoons' like some rather lame jokes, but those are expected. Had good action, the animation was rather nice and fluid, still so-so on the characters.
Rex is the basic template of a male teenager protagonist, he is an 'Evo' but can control the nanites personally and he also has no memory of his past before getting his abilities. Agent Six is super amazing and competent but very Agent Smith, doesn't emote much and is very by the books so far and super fast (and is voiced by a seasoned Soap Opera Actor). Dr. Holiday, while the name amuses me can't really say much about her character, too soon in the series to really develop. BoBo Haha is a talking chimp, meh I have my reservations about this character as he feels a little forced (as sidekick comedy types usually are) but who knows, maybe it'll be a little better in the next few eps. Van Kleiss I'm actually very intrigued by for the antagonist of the series, not much to say on him now but his introduction was cool.
So pretty basic start, nothing exciting or ground breaking yet. So far I am intrigued but it will take a few episodes before if I know if I'll be totally hooked or just mildly amused. Though, the second episode hasn't made the best impression on me so far. The First episode did well for setting the stage and introducing the characters and primary antagonist, though I felt it moved a tad too fast. This was understated by the second ep in which everything moved entirely too fast. It felt like they were cramming far too much into a single episode. I'm hoping that the team on this gets a better feel for the series and starts smoothing things out, otherwise this could really get annoying.
That being said, I'm still interested in seeing this out, if at least for the first season. In my experience with cartoons, it takes about a season for a series to really 'find itself'. By the end of the series, the VA's have found their characters and the writers usually have found a good pace and sense of story telling for the series.
Also, I think I will be doing more cartoon reviews, because I talk about them so much and I love them so...
